    Survey Supports EthanoVs Benefits
WASHINGTON, D.C.— With
recent passage of the Clean Air
Act, and its provisions requiring
increased use of oxygenated fuels
in our worst carbon monoxide
(CO) and ozone non-attainment
areas, millions of new consumers
nationwide will have the oppor
tunity to use oxygenated fuels,
such as ethanol, as part of a com
prehensive new federal clean air
strategy.
With more than 800 billion
miles being driven using ethanol
blends, it is clear that over the past
decade the consumer acceptability
of ethanol and other oxy-fuels has
increased dramatically. However,
as the new Clean Air Act is imple
mented, what will be the view of
this new generation of drivers
toward increased ethanol use. The
answer is overwhelming support.
In a recent survey of consumers
in Denver, Albuquerque and
Phoenix, cities with existing oxy
fucl programs, it was found that:
• Nearly half of those surveyed
in those three cities believed the

program had improved air quality
in their area.
• Of those who expressed a pre
ference, 73% expressed a distinct
preference for ethanol over
MTBE.
• At an average ratio of well
over 3 to 1 (62%), drivers in all
three cities indicated they would
be more inclined to purchase an
ethanol blend from a pump
labeled “Containing Ethanol for
Clean Air,” assuming price was
not a factor.
• In all three cities, more than
75% of those surveyed believed
that the government should be
doing more to promote the use of
renewable fuels such as ethanol.
• Nearly 70% of those surveyed
said that the crisis in the Persian
Gulf had made them more con
cerned about how the U.S. looks at
alternative fuels as a means to ease
our dependence on foreign oil.
These results clearly demons
trate that consumers in cities with
existing oxy-fucl program not
only support the use of ethanol as
part of a clean air strategy, but
