Although only six years old, Katie has a job to do. She is the Li’l Miss Dairy Princess for Lebanon County. She wears a crown and a banner when she works at her job. That job is to tell others how good milk, cheese, ice cream, and other dairy products are to taste. Sometimes she goes to stores and hands out samples of cheese or milkshakes. Sometimes she rides in parades and waves to the crowd. Katie said that* her favorite things to eat are macaroni and cheese, yogurt, muenster cheese, milkshakes, and teaberry ice cream. Each of her favorite dishes have milk in them. “Milk makes my teeth strong, too,” Katie said. To become the Li’l Miss Dairy Princess, Katie had to attend a con test and answer questions. She took a poster to the contest. The poster had cow pictures on it with her and her brother, Dustin, who live on a dairy farm with their parents, Gary and Barbara Lentz. Katie told the man who inter viewed her that she wanted to sing a song for the audience. Katie sang her favorite song called God’s Love. She sang, “God made puppy dogs, and kitty cats. He made dairy cows, dairy cows, to make chocolate shakes, and dish rags to clean the mess we make.” The audience loved the song. They clapped and clapped. The song was written many years ago by Mauri Macy. It is a song that Katie’s mother said changed Katie’s life. Before Katie learned that song, she was very shy. She did not like to talk with strangers or go places without her parents. But she liked to sing so she started singing in the children’s choir at her church. When the choir director taught the children the song about God’s Love, Katie loved it so much. It reminded her of the things she loved on her farm puppy dogs, kitty cats, cows, and milkshakes. * Soon she wanted to sing it for other people. When she entered the Li’l Miss Dairy contest, she knew the other people would like it too. “I don’t get nervous when I sing it,” Katie said. Now she likes to talk to stran gers too. Sometimes when Katie goes with the grownup dairy prin cesses to places such as a nursing home, Katie sings her song for the people. Katie goes to school and plays at home like other girls her age. She is a good helper by watching her brother when her parents milk the 80 Holsteins they raise on their Lebanon farm that has 130 acres. While the parents work in the to* bam the children sometimes make a house with the pillows on their sofa or they watch Sesame Street. v* But usually they ride their toys around the bam. Most of all they like to play with Katrina. “Katrina is my favorite cow. f She is very tame,” Katie said. “We V sit on her back and slide down.” ' Because Katrina is so tame, Katie likes to hook up the milker to her. Katrina is actually Katie’s cousin’s cow. When her cousin went to college, he asked Katie to take care of her because he knew Katie would love Katrina.
