Holstein Beef
Symposium Set
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) — A national symposium on
Holstein beef production will be
held Feb. 13-15 at the Penn Harris
Inn and Convention Center in
Harrisburg, Pa.
The symposium, a cooperative
effort between commercial opera
tors and several universities, is
sponsored by the Northeast Reg
ional Agricultural Engineering
Service.
Penn State College of Agricul
ture faculty and staff will be on
hand to discuss issues and trends
in this growing segment of Pen
nsylvania’s agriculture industry.
The symposium will examine top
ics ranging from opportunities for
Holstein beef production to mark
eting finished Holstein steers.
The potential for Holstein steers
in a beef feeding operation will be
discussed by John Comerford,
assistant professor of dairy and
animal science at Penn State.
Extension veterinarian Larry
Hutchinson will discuss environ
mental requirements for dairy beef
health. The impact of increased

ers organized by Penn State
Coopcrauvc Extension. The prog
ram will be staged in Warren on
Saturday, February 23, 1991 from
1-4 p.m.
According to Sanford Smith,
extension agent, the program has
been organized at the request of
many individuals who are per-
plexed by the numerous legal
issues that effect woodland
ownership,

on calf prices will be addressed by
agricultural economist H. Louis
Moore.
Nutritional management of
Holstein steers will be the focus of
a session led by Harold Harpstcr,
associate professor of dairy and
animal science. A session on
marketing finished Holstein steers
will be led by extension meat spe
cialist William R. Henning.
Speakers also will include gov
ernment and business representa
tives and faculty from Cornell
University, West Virginia Univer
sity, and the University of
Wisconsin-Madison.
A registration fee of $l4O
includes admission to the sympo
sium, one lunch, refreshment
breaks, and a copy of the sympo
sium proceedings. The proceed
ings also will be available for $2O

“For many woodland owners,
there are more questions than
there are answers,” said Smith.
“Questions like: Am I liable for
hunters and recreational vehicles
on my property? Will posting
effect my liability? Is the old oil
and gas right of way through my
property still valid? and What
does limber theft involve? arc

The seminar will cover several
of the more pertinent legal issues
that concern woodlands, and
answer many of the questions fre-

out that “it is not the intent of the
program to provide individual leg
al counsel for specific problems.”
