Dairymen Association Present Honors

of their educational programs for
young cooperative leaders.
Numerous professional honors
have come to Duane during his
career with stale, regional and
nauonal awards from the National
Association of County Agricultur
al Agents (NACAA) in the areas
of public relations, communica
tions and for distinguished ser
vice. He also served on the region
al and national boards of the
NACAA.
Duane and his wife Donna also
coordinate the appearance of the
Dairy Princess group from Cum
berland and other nearby counties
at the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s
annual meeting. The Pennsylvania
Dairymen’s Association is
pleased to present the Extension
Award to Duane Duncan.
1991 Yearbook
The Pennsylvania Dairymen’s
Association is pleased to dedicate
the 1991 Yearbook to E. Wayne
Beshorc.
Wayne was born and raised on
the family farm just outside of
New Cumberland in the northern
most tip of York County. After
completing a tour of duty in the
Army stationed in India, Wayne
returned home to the farm. Dairy
and truck farming totally occupied
all lime for Wayne and his wife
Athena. Included in the truck
farming was a weekly route to
downtown Harrisburg.
Wayne eventually decided to

Over the years many awards
and honors were bestowed upon
Wayne and his family. Several
include: Named Master Fanner in
1981 for his farming practices and
leadership. Wayne received the
Charles Cowan Award in 1984 for
“leadership and concern contri
buting to the improvements and
promotion of the dairy industry in
the state of Pennsylvania.” In
1989 the Wayne Beshore Family
was honored as the Outstanding
Farm Family in York County by
the York Chamber of Commerce.
Wayne has held many leader
ship roles over the years, several
include President of the Pennsyl
vania Dairymen’s Association,
Past President of the York County
Holstein Club and DHIA, a state
Holstein director for many years
and a delegate to the National
Holstein Convention for many
years. He was a director for the
York County Farm and Home
Administration.
Wayne was also a past presi
dent of the York County Farmers
Association and the Cooperative
Extension Service Executive
Committee.
Currently he is serving on the
local ASCS committee.
Community activities included
serving on the school board and
township planning committee for
many years. Currently he is active
in the Grange and his church, St.
Paul’s United Methodist Church.

parents of four children: Marvin,
an attorney in Harrisburg; Joy and
Kirby, both executive Vice Presi
dents with Dean Witter in Harris
burg; and Jed, the third generation
to farm at Beshore Farms. Wayne
and Athena have 13 grand
children.
Extension Dairy Specialist
The most recent report from the
Pa. Ag Statistics Service (PASS)
indicates that there were 682,000
milk cows as of September 1990.
We have averaged about 17,000
fewer cows for the first nine
months of 1990 versus 1989.
Although the last 4 months
have been on the plus side, milk
production for the first nine
months was 173 million pounds
below the 1989 figure.

PDPP Board
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
At the December meeting of
the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion
Commodity Marketing Board, the
PDPP elected new officers and
announced plans for the prog
ram’s third annual meeting. In
addition, four new board members
were welcomed to the PDPP
Board.
At the board’s reorganization,
Karl Kroeck, from Tioga County
was elected chairman. Kroeck will
be joined on the PDPP’s executive
committee by Donald Cook, vice
chairman, from Luzerne County;
Janet Reynolds, secretary, from
Northumberland County; Robert
Gehman, treasurer, from Lehigh
County; Dr. John Plummer from
Bucks County; and Richard Shel
lenberger from Lancaster County.
The board also reviewed plans
for the third annual meeting of the
PDPP. The meeting is scheduled
for January 28, at the Hotel Her
shey, in Hershey.
