Breeding Show Gets Attention EVERETT NEWSWANGER Managing Editor HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) —The youth that had both the grand and reserve grand champion at the Keystone International here last fall, did it again. He had the grand champion steer. Nathan Claycomb, Alum Bank, Bedford County, took the top hon ors with' a Maine-Angue Angus crossbred steer that won over all the other crossbred and purebred steers in the show. This was the first year the purebred steers had individual breed divisions. “I have been winning all year,” Claycomb told the mob of state wide TV, radio and print reporters that converged on the 12-year old, sixth grade student at Chestnut Ridge Elementry School. In addi tion to KILE, Claycomb recorded wins at the Bedford County Fair and the Jack Pot show, Timonium, MD. As soon as Judge Ron Bolze, Ohio State Beef Extension, named the champion, the usual media attention centered on the boy who’s stature isn’t much more than half as high as the steer’s eyes in posed position. He was even shor ter than that when he first started showing 4-H steers, four years ago. This reporter can see that Clay comb has grown taller than at our first meeting, but he still must look under the steer’s chin to get the judges eye. Claycomb told reporters its a lot of work, about two hours per day, to prepare a steer for the show. He said this champion won because “he has a lot of muscle tone and a good butt.” Pennsylvania Agricultural Sec retary Boyd Wolff presented the banner to Claycomb. Reserve champion honors went to veteran showperson, Kristin Chupp, New Holland, Lancaster County. Chupp has had many win ning steers including the reserve grand champion at the Farm Show two years ago. Other champions named in the steer show include: Vicki Hess, Lancaster, champion lightweight; Heidi Quanbeck, Lancaster, reserve champion lightweight; Heather Fuls, Cumberland, champion middleweight: Shawn Waltimyer, York, reserve champ ion middleweight; Ed Livingston, York, champion Angus; Kevin Miller, champion Limousin; Kyle Rooker, Fayette, champion Hereford/Polled Hereford; Jodi Dutrey, York, champion Shorthorn.
