increase, according to DHIA
records.
“We just took real good care of
them and took care of the small
things,” said Mike Zook, who
operates the farm. This is the first
year he operated the farm, and said
that simple management, includ
ing breeding cows on lime and
making the best use of the DHIA
tests, helped them improve milk
and protein production.
S&M Ayr Farm milks 40 cows
in the herd twice a day. The herd
includes 30 heifers and calves.
The barn itself was built in
1987. S&M Ayr milks out of tie
stall with milking buckets.

“make you at least look at the
cows once a month,” according to
S&M Ayr. “That helps in the
culling.”
S&M Ayr grows most of the for
ages and purchases grain and hay
from local vendors. The feed is
tested by F. M. Browns and Son.
The breed is sired by a combina
tion of Atlantic Breeders, Sire
Power, and CIAQ, from Canada.
For S&M Ayr, the day begins at
4:30 a.m., and milking begins at 5
a.m. The last milking is about 5
p.m., and the day doesn’t end until
about 7 p.m.
The farm’s operator enjoys
“being his own boss.” But S&M
Ayr has help from the family when
the operators need time to rest
from their hard work.
