ABCDE AFTER QUOTES REPRE SENTS DAYS SINCE LAST ACTUAL MARKET TEST QUOTES ARE DROPPED AFTER 5 DAYS OF NO TEST OR BEFORE IF THEY NO LONGER REFLECT CURRENT MARKET CONDITIONS Farmers Should Exercise Dairy Cows EDWARD J. WOODS Washington Co. Agent I know that many of our dairy farmers keep their milking cows confined to the stall bams much of the lime. This is easy to do when you are short of labor during the winter months. In order to have a healthy herd, the cows should be allowed out side to exercise daily unless severe weather conditions exist. The exercise will not only keep their feet and legs in better condition, but will permit the cows in heat to be detected that is often a prob lem when cows arc kept confined too much of the time. If the herd is turned out for 15 to 30 minutes each day, the time involved will be very worthwhile. You’ll find very few days when the weather will interfere. Knock Out Those Alfalfa Weeds Winter weeds in our alfalfa fields are every bit as predictable as summer weeds are in com and soybeans. Colder weather is here and hay fields are dormant We now have a choice to use different herbicides, depending largely on the kinds of weeds present that need to be knocked out. The most commonly found winter annuals at this lime include chickweed and the four mustard weeds—shepherds purse, pepper weed, pennycress, and yellow leesll 8116 GREAT VALUE PORK CARCASS CUTOUT WEDNESDAY, DEC. 12 ESTIMATED GROSS CUTOUT VAL UES OF A 175 LB. It pays to know your weeds before selecting the herbicide. Check the “Agronomy Guide” and read the label on the container or package. There arc directions and limitations to get the job done right in the next six weeks. Evergreens Drop Some Of Their Needles During Fall Don’t worry if your evergreens drop some of their needles during the fall. This is because pines, spruces, and similar evergreens usually start dropping one year’s growth of needles during September and continue well into October. In Scotch pines, the 3-year-old needles turn yellowish and then fall off. The red pine usually drops its 4-year-old needles, while the white pine normally keeps only 1 or 2 year’s growth of needles. Don’t be concerned if your ever greens have dropped or are still dropping needles. The needles which arc lost are those nearest the center of the tree. The younger, green needles remain at the ends of the branches. While this shedding operation is in progress, the trees often appear to be dead or dying. However, as soon as they are exposed to a hard wind or heavy rain, the old needles arc knocked to the ground and the trees again appear normal.
