The above motto has been in existence and has been repeated by producers, breeders, extension
personnel, and Association-related employees thousands and thousands of times.
Since the beginning, the Duroc breed has been recognized by almost everyone as unquestionably
the fastest growing hog on the face of the earth and one that possesses the genetic ability to convert
feed stuffs into a saleable product in a highly efficient manner.
I find one of the most interesting concepts of “DUROCS - GROW FASTER ON LESS FEED” is
that you can get punch in the areas of growth and efficiency for every genetic line that is available in
our breed today. In reviewing and analyzing three genetic strains present in our breed, it was evident
that they possessed these powers even though they have been highly linebrcd for a number of
generations.
Breeders have absent-mindedly tried to remove these genetic facts; but, try as they may, you can
still count on a purebred Duroc to deliver the extra needed punch.
A review of the fall sales that I had the privilege to work is an excellent example of what I am
talking about. I was able to visit with a number of commercial producers at these functions, with the
conversations invariably turning to the fact that they used Duroc parentage for two main reasons: (1)
they grow much faster than the norm; and (2) they consumed less feed in the process!
These producers were successful in their own right, have survived the rigors of life and less-than
desirable economic conditions, and intend to survive the prosper during the remainder of this decade
and into the next century. They were also articulate and intelligent enough to know that they
couldn’t get enough of a good thing. They recognized what our breed has to offer and put it to use.
It’s come to my attention this fall that producers will look at a set of figures, analyze them, and
search out boars and gilts that excel in growth and efficiency.
You can read all the reports, data sheets, and professionally prepared papers you want to, but the
fact of the matter is that commercial pork producers respect the Duroc breed for what it has to offer
and have done an excellent job capitalizing on it. They know that they’ll get that extra punch when
they use our genetics and they also have realized (and capitalized on) the fact that Durocs are big,
high-performance hogs that continue to generate and produce their entire lives. Unfortunately, the
competition cannot state claim to these facts!
