Chick Mortality
(Continued from Page D 23)
sequently used for breeders. Ideal
ly day-old started breeder chicks
should be given a choice of heat
and a cool room.
• Leg and foot disorders of
breeders hinder the fertilization
and hatch of more strong chicks
than most managers realize. A
weak-legged breeder, sitting down
more than half the time, has very
poor health and also may have
weak sperm or egg cells.
The opening of many thousand
unhatched embryos has made it
obvious that most are weak late
embryos unable to cut out of a
shell or are early-dead that have
been reported as infertile.
Breeders must exercise, and
therefore must be given the space
to move.
• Although yet unproven, giz
zard function seems to relate to
bird health and reproductive
performance.
• Gizzard size, strength and
function in some turkey, chicken
and game birds such as pheasants,
appear to be abnormal. Gizzards
may be small, pale, flabby, fat and
having poor function. Look for

this in all dead birds,
Birds on a high-fiber diet plus
granite or insoluble grit and some
clean litter-for-eating show giz
zards that are larger, red, lean,
firm, and with little adhering fat.
• Nervous system disorders,
both behavioral and brain inflam
mation, appear to be on the
increase and may result in poor
breeders. Diagnostic veterinarians
have reported more incidences of
slight brain inflammation to me in
the last 10 years than in the previ
ous 10 years. It may be that veter
inarians are reporting it more, or
that the incidence of it is greater.
The answer may be in the con
ditioning of a breeder to be a
breeder. Some farmers believe
that the care, feed and environ
ment of a breeder during its
growing-up period can produce a
better breeder and, hence, a better
chick from her egg. Young pullets
given a roost will, as adult breed
ers, seek a nest, thus preventing
dirty-floor eggs.
• Abnormal nitrogen metabolism
may lead to several disorders, as
well as produce abnormal manure,

whose problems we have already
considered.
Nitrogen in a normal bird’s
body is effectively handled by the
urinary, digestive or other sys
tems. Abnormal nitrogen diges
tion, assimilation, metabolism or
passage in waste is evident in one
or more of the following; white,
viscous liquid in manure rather
than normal whiter, pasty urates;
overabundance of white, pasty
urates compared to percentage of
dark manure (this occurred in
adult Bobwhite quail fed a high
protein starter ration); gout or
bumblefoot.
• Many of us know 100 little
about the mechanism by which an
unhealthy breeder bird prevents or
recovers from disease, but the
glandular, endocrine and immune
systems may each or all be
involved.
Some nutritionists are advising
that nutrients can sometimes
replace medicines to maintain
healthy birds and prevent disease,
or shorten the recovery period of a
bird that already is ill. Codliver
oil, molasses, VME, essential fat
ty acids, essential amino acids and
fiber have been used from time to
time to improve bird health. Put
all sick birds in a hospital pen;
they will improve and so will the
manager.

In summary, our goals remain:
• To eliminate or minimize ear
ly death of young animals by
studying the amount and cause of
weak or dead breeders or young.
Health of each chick must be
recorded, simply reporting dead or
alive at day old is of little or no
value. Quality, not just quantity
