The symptoms and lesions in the flocks are quite varied. The classi cal symptom is lameness with rup tured hock tendons as the classical lesion; however, most of the birds appear only pale, stunted, with an unthrifty appearance and abnormal wing feathers. Usually, the birds have pasted vents and an orange PRICES EFFECTIVE UNTIL 11-30-90 mucus is often found in the intes tine. Leg problems are also quite common in affected flocks. Over the years, researchers have attempted to determine the cause. They have found that a reovirus is a major contributor to the problem and that the virus is egg transmit ted. The infected chick then sheds the virus in its droppings, contami nating the poultry house environ ment (the litter, air, water, and feed), thereby infecting the other birds in the poultry house. Other factors such as genetics, nutrition al deficiencies, and bacterial infec tion are also thought to be involved in the problem. v I I Breeder flocks can be vacci nated several times with both live and killed bivalent reovirus vac cines; however, these vaccines and vaccination programs have met with various degrees of success in preventing the economic losses in the broiler flock. Newer reovirus vaccines have been developed recently that can be given to the broiler chick in the » Route 30 West at the Centerville Exit Lancaster Farming Saturday, November 24,1990-DS hatchery at one day of age and then be followed by a booster vaccina tion in the drinking water at approximately 7 to 10 days of age. Early results indicate that while this vaccination program is helpful in preventing economic losses on some problem farms, losses con tinue to occur on other farms. FFA Raises KANSAS CITY. Mo.
