Sandy takes care of the breeding
program and uses sires almost
exclusively through Atlantic
Breeders. She selects production,
but also accounts for legs.
The high culling rate reflects
Milos philosophy that dairying is a
business; if the cow doesn’t per-
form well, she’s out.
Some other changes occured in
the business within the last three
years, Milos said.
According to Sinan, “we had
some problems with the heifers
(legs, he said). So we built a heifer
bam (in 1987) and that contributed
a lot to heifers coming on and
doing a lot better for us.”
The heifer bam is semi-Virginia
style with an open scrape alley and
bedded packs.
In addition to the other work
done at the farm this past year,
Milos said he added another silo up

at the heifer bam,
“We have a lot of haylage and
we fill a silo. We like to get it in
(with)in a day and a half. We feed a
lot. When we built the heifer facili
ty we put a silo in and added
another silo this year. Now we
have two silos at the bam and two
at the heifer bam.”
He said the protein percentage of
his home-grown hay and haylage
runs in the high teens and low 20s.
“We test all the time and we go
by that. It’s almost like a TMR (tot
al mixed ration). We mix it up in
a
cart. When it comes
out, it is pretty much mixed feed.
We feed that about four times a

day.”
As far as leading the state in herd
butterfat production, Sinan
explained that the sulfur seemed to
do the trick.
“We were having a problem
with butterfat two years ago and we
always did breed to get it,” he said.
But a high butterfat test evaded
him.
“My wife read an article in some
publication about using sulfur.
Now we add 3 ounces of sulfur (a
prepared additive) and yeast
culture.
“We were running 3.2 percent
(milkfat) and 3.3 percent and (after
using the sulfur and yeast) we

increased by the end of the month
to 3.8 and 4.0 and have been up
there ever since,” Milos said.
However, Sinan said he tries to
keep up with all aspects of
dairying.
With their breeding program,
with his wife keeping an eye for
heat detection “We have preety
good luck with first service.”
He also does things like keep
half the bam lights on and a radio
playing during the night to encour
age the cows to eat through the
night.
Ventilation is also important to
the Sinan family.
