In the meantime, I decided that
I could spare an hour before cook
ing dinner for my son and so I
walked behind the bam to a grassy
bank along the Conestoga River.
At first I got no bites but then I
caught four sunfish and a 15-inch
small-mouthed bass. It was fun
and a bit exciting to pull it in. I
hated to stop fishing to cook. But,

I had a nice fish for supper without
traveling a great distance.
We visited the Bloomsburg Fair
again this year. It was a lovely day
for a drive and some maple trees
had pretty yellow and red leaves.
One building contained many,
many breeds of dogs and they
were quite interesting and also
noisy. The afternoon was spent in
the crowded bleachers watching
horse pulling contests as they
moved heavier and heavier loads.
We sat beside people from Mary
land and New York state.
Last week we spent a few hours
fishing at Laurel Lake in Cumber
land County. We were the only
boat on the lake all day. There was
a breeze which turned our boat in
a semi-circle as the anchor held it
in place. Here I caught four small
perch which I threw back. The
reflection of the colorful leaves in
the lake was quite beautiful, and
the whole area was peaceful and

CORRECTION Fern Schlegel, Dalmatia, sent in a
recipe for apple crisp that was printed incorrectly in the
September 15, issue. Here is the correct recipe.
Apple Crisp
Pare and slice enough apples to cover 8-inch pan
Add:
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon white or whole wheat flour
'A teaspoon cinnamon
Mix granulated sugar, flour, and cinnamon; sprinkle
over apples.
Crumb topping:
V* cup brown sugar
V» cup white or whole wheat flour
V* cup oatmeal, minute
% cup butter or margarine
Mix together by hand until mixture becomes crumbly.
Cover apples with crumb topping.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. May be
eaten warm or cooled. Good topped with ice cream.

recipes.
1 bay leaf
2 heads fresh dill
Dash garlic
1 /z teaspoon ground red pepper
Pack small cucumbers in a jar. Heat to boiling and
pour over cucumbers:
1 quart vinegar
1 quart water
V* cup sugar
1 /z cup pickling salt
Process in open kettle; boiling water for 5 to 10
minutes. Liquid will make 6 to 8 pints.
