SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Dairy
farmer Lewis Gardner of Galeton
has been re-elected president of
Eastern Milk Producers
Cooperative.
The unanimous vote by the
board of directors took place in
Syracuse, N.Y., following East
ern’s annual business and delegate
meetings Sept. 27-28.
Also elected were:
• Timothy Bryant of Pawlet,
VT, vice president.
• Edwin Schoen of Phelps, NY,
secretary.
• George E. Mesick Jr. of South
Schodack, NY, treasurer.
• Harold W. Bailey of Roaring
Spring, assistant secretary
treasurer.
President Gardner, an Eastern
member for six years, was first
elected to the board in 1987. He
served as vice president for a year
before being elected to his first
term as president in 1989.
As president, he represents
about 2,800 farm families in nine
states. As a director, he represents
about 200 farmers in a district that
encompasses all or parts of 18
counties in northwestern
Pennsylvania.
Gardner and his wife, Lois, pur
chased their 100-acre Potter
County farm in 1978. They milk
about 45 cows out of a herd of 90
Holsteins. They rent another ISO
tillable acres, growing mostly
alfalfa and com. Their teenage
sons all help on the farm - Lewis
111, Lee Thomas and Levi Earl.
Vice President Bryant operates
a 315-acre farm with his wife,
Nancy, and their children, Laura
Jean, 17, Timothy Jr., 16, and

Gardner Re-Elected President Of Eastern Milk
Robert Stephen, 12. They have a
herd of 175 Holsteins, including
85 milking cows. Bryant, who is a
1970 graduate of the University of
Vermont, purchased the farm in
Pawlet in 1972 after working in
partnership with his father and
brother on a farm in Manchester,
Vt. He became a member and then
president of Northern Farms
Cooperative, and joined Eastern’s
board of directors in November
1984 when Northern merged with
Eastern. He represents about 190
farmers in a district covering the
northeastern half of Vermont, the
southern half of Vermont and a
slice of New York State. Bryant
also is former chairman of the
Council of Northeast Farmer
Cooperatives.
Secretary Schoen succeeds C.
Lee Greenwalt to the position.
Greenwalt, who operates a
110-cow dairy in Lawrenceville,
retired after serving over nine
years on the board. Schoen, who
served as assistant secretary
treasurer for two years, represents
about 190 farm families in a dis
trict covering part of the central,
southern tier and western regions
of New York. A member of East
ern since 1970, he began farming
in 1965 after getting an associate’s
degree from Cornell. In 1982 he
became partners with John Ste
phan, also of Phelps, and since
then the farm has grown from 72
to 400 acres. They milk 85 Hols
tein cows. Schoen and his wife,
Jean, are also active in another
business, Schoen-Wyffels Homes
Inc., which markets log homes.

Treasurer Mesick begins his
second tom in office. He repre
sents about 190 Carmen in a dis
trict that cuts a diagonal swath
from the St Lawrence River to the
Mohawk Valley and the Capital
District and into the eastern put of
Massachusetts. Mesick operates
an 800-acre farm, milking ISO
Holsteins, in the southern end of
Rensselaer County. He also raises
buffalo. Mesick has lived all his
life on the family farm which has
been associated with Eastern since
1941. In 1949 he went into part
nership with his father; in 1960 he
and his wife, Gerry, took over the
operation, and in 1987 they
formed a partnership with their

the Farm Credit Advisory Board,
the Milk Promotion Service Inc,
board, the board of the New Eng
land Dairy and Food Council, and
the National Buffalo Association
board.
Assistant Secretary-Treasurer
Bailey starts his first term as an
officer of the board. An Eastern
member since 1966, Bailey oper
ates a 138-acre farm in partnership
with his brother, Bernard. They
milk 90 cows out of a herd of 180
Holsteins. Elected to the board in
1988, Bailey represents some 190
4-H Leaders Recognized
WILLIAMSPORT (Lycoming
Co.) The annual 4-H Recogni
tion Night was held October 9,
1990 at the Clarkstown Fireball.
At the dinner, members, lead
os, and friends of 4-H donors
were recognized. Thirty first-year
leaders were honored. Lois Beav
er of Chippewa Acres was recog
nized for serving five years as a
4-H Leader. Other leaders and
their years of service were: 10
years - Nancy DeWire, Green Val
ley 4-H Club; Donald Hill, Little
Muncy Creek 4-H Club; Ida Shol
der, Lyco Warriors 4-H Club;
MerriAnn Way, Fairfield 4-H
Club; Beverly Berger, Little Mun
cy Creek and Marian Lovell, of
the Bottle Run Club are 15-year
leaders and Alice Girven, of Little
Muncy Creek has served 25 years.

Outstanding 4-H’ers for 1990
were Yvonne Guillaume and
Brady Crist, both of Cogan House.
Bill Klees received the James
Nicholson Citizenship Award and
was honored for his service as
Lycoming County 4-H
ambassador.
A presentation on Japan was
made by the 1989 4-H
exchangees: Heidi Walls, Shan
non Vermeulen, Krissy Girvin,
and Heather McCaslin.
