Correspondent HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) “Lots of the sheep here are competitive nationally,” judge Dan Strahl said of the Montadale, Southdown and Oxford sheep he judged at the Keystone Interna tional Livestock Exposition October 5. ‘The Montadales, for example, should do well in the Montadale show in Louisville in November,” he continued. Strahl chose two rams shown by Keith Crome of Paris, Illinois as the champion and reserve champion rams of the Montadale show. Crome also showed the reserve champion ' v Amy Eshelman holds her champion Oxford ewe. Denise Deal shows the champion Hampshire ram at KILE pu ig* shows the champion Shropshire ram. KILE Sheep Display High Quality, Depth ewe, while champion ewe honors went to Maureen M. Hess of Hud son, New York. Hess was named Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder in the Montadale division. Strahl raises Suffolks and Hampshires near Greenfield, Indiana. During a break in the judging, he recommended the closely-shaved Southdowns as being good for children getting started in sheep showing. “You don’t have to be an expert to show them. They are prepared by wash ing and shearing, and they’re ready to show.” W.G. Carpenter and Son of Jef ferson, Maryland took home most of the honors in the Southdown show. They showed the champion ram, the champion ewe and the champion sale lamb, and were named Premier Exhibitor and Pre mier Breeder. F.R. Farms of Mar linton, West Virginia, showed the reserve champion ram, while Nick Smith of Jeromesville, Ohio, had the reserve champion ewe. In the Oxford division of KILE, held in the Farm Show Complex, Gerald Thoma of Kensington, Ohio, showed the champion ram and reserve champion ewe, and received Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder honors. Amy Eshelman, Sinking Spring, showed the champion ewe and reserve champion ram. Cheviot, Hampshire And Shropshire Henry Kuykendall of Ration Maker Cheviots, Asheboro, North Carolina, showed both the champ ion ram and champion ewe in the Cheviot show. The reserve champion ram was shown by Erdenheim Farm, Layefette Hill. Mike Koehler of Schnecksville had the reserve champion ewe and was named Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder. In the Hampshire show, Vemon Deal and family of Navarre, Ohio took home the blue ribbon for their spring ram lamb. Christine Baxter of Marlinton, West Virgi nia, showed the grand champion ewe, a yearling. Reserve champ ion ram honors went to Tim and Sarah Fleener, Robesonia. The Flceners were also the Premier Exhibitors and Premier Breeders of the show. Price Stock Farm of Westminster, Maryland showed the reserve champion ewe. Wey Shropshires of Kutztown had the champion ram and reserve champion ewe and took home Pre mier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder honors. Peter D’Ambra, Jefferson, Maryland, showed the champion ewe and the reserve champion ram. Albert Wilson, Jr. of Rural Retreat, Virginia, judged the Che viots, Hampshires and Shropshires. Sire Power Scholarship Program TUNKHANNOCK (Wyoming Co.) The respective Boards of Directors for Sire Power’s Mem bership Sales Divisions - North east, Maryland, and West Virginia - have announced the continuation of a scholarship program. This program was implemented in order to help deserving youth living in our membership area continue their college education. A total of fifteen $500.00 scholar ships (ten for the Northeast Sales Division, four in the Maryland Sales Division, and one in the West Virginia Sales Division) will be made available, and will be awarded at the 1990 Sire Power Annual Meeting scheduled for January 23, 1991. The eligibility requirements for these scholarships are as follows: 1. The applicant must be an incoming college sophomore, junior, or senior during the year of application. 2. The applicant’s parents or guardians, or the applicant himself must be an active member in one of Sire Power’s membership sales areas. 3. The scholarship must be applied to the student’s continued ipiv penter of Maryland. the Montadale show at KILE education in an agricultural related field. 4. Previous scholarship award winners will remain eligible dur ing subsequent award years. The continuing education of our youth in agriculture is very impor tant to the Sire Power organiza tion, it’s Board of Directors, and management With this scholar ship program, we would like to make this continued education possible for young people of farm families in Sire Power’s member ship areas. To receive a scholarship appli cation, interested students should contact the respective sales and service director for their member ship sales division.
