According to Vanderwert, the numbers mean all the more if con sidered alongside total numbers in the seedstock arena and in the total beef industry. USD A figures indicate the nation’s beef industry hit the peak of its last expansion cycle in 1982 with an inventory of approximate ly 1 IS million head, the first time in history the peak of a current cycle did not exceed the previous one. Since 1982, inventory num bers have declined 13 percent to around 100 million head. During the same period of time, according to the National Associa tion of Livestock records, total registrations of the IS largest beef breeds in the U.S. have declined 16.7 percent ‘Through this period of indust rial contraction, total industry and seedstock, Limousin has increased its registration by 69.6 percent,” said Vanderwert. “Limousin is without question the fastest grow ing beef breed during that period of time when we consider breeds registering 30,000 head or more annually. | Real Rubber i Waterproof | & AMERICAN MADE § | mm*' WHY PAY RETAIL 0 ft Topiace - 3 eyelet Zipper Front - Extra I ft Ideal For Barn Use insulation - Suitable For 8 g Insulated $47.95 The Coldest Weather 8 j Not Insulated $32.95 $54.95 8 ! Concentration in the breed business is under way and will continue at an accelerated pace.” For the last nine years, Limou sin has been the fifth largest breed in the U.S. Depending rat the fig ures released by other breeds as their 1990 fiscal years come to an end, Vanderwert speculates Limousin may be the fourth largest breed, based on annual registrations. Vanderwert said, “The really exciting thing to limousin breed ers is that the breed’s expansion can be explained in real-world economic terms rather than as an industrial fad.” There is no question increasing consumer demand for leanness and increasing commercial demands for growth and perfor mance helped open the door of expansion for the Limousin breed through the last decade. “In the future, consumers and the commercial industry will place even more pressure on those pro duction areas,” said Vanderwert.
