the “National Register of Historic
Places,” the nation’s official
record of buildings, structures,
sites, districts, and objects deemed
worthy of preservation by the U.S.

Preservation Act of 1966, the
“National Register of Historic
Places” safeguards designated
properties from federally funded
or assisted projects which may
endanger them.
Brenda Barrett, director of the
PHMC’s Bureau for Historic Pre
servation, which administers the
statewide preservation program,
said that listing in the National
Register also makes owners who
rehabilitate certified historic com
mercial properties eligible for fed
eral tax benefits. To date, more
than $5OO million in federal tax
incentives have been granted to
property owners since the prog
ram’s inception.
