Al4-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 29,1990 30 YEARS AGO -Two Lancaster County Future Farmers represented the state in the livestock judging contest at the Virginia State Fair at Richmond this week. John Henry Hess of Manheim Rl, who placed sixth in the state contest at the June convention paced the 3-man Pennsylvania team to a third place ribbon Monday. Larry Weaver, New Holland, who placed sixth in state competi tion earlier (his year was the other team' member from Lancaster County. Hess is a student at Manheim Central High School while Weaver is enrolled in vocational agricul ture at Garden Spot High School, New Holland. -A 1,130 pound Angus steer named Shorty came out on the long end in the best cattle judging Thursday at the New Holland Pair. Shorty, a Lancaster County bred calf, won for his master, Carl Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Les ter Weaver, New Holland Rl, the first grand championship rosette of his career which started eight years ago. Weaver, a graduate of Garden Spot High School, received his steer from the herd of George Jack son and Son of Christiana R 1 when Contracts Being Offered For... Rosemary Nolt, the 13 year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Nolt, Bareville, captured the runner-up spot with a 1,015 pound Angus in her first year of 4-H Baby Beef work. Champion Hereford wa exhi bited by Rodella Kurtz, Morgan town. He weighed in at 1050 lbs. Meanwhile, a 204 pound Duroc Jersey barrow, shown by John Eby, Gordonville Rl, took the championship in the swine show. -Top places in the tobacco and com judging at New Holland Fair this week went to Coun ty farmers, but the big money prize for the top hay exhibit was carried off by a Lebanon County Future Fanner. The $lOO grand champion bale, slice of heat cured alfalfa hay was exhibited by George Bryce, Leba non R 4. William Rhinier, another Future Farmer from New Holland R 2, took home the $5O grand prize for his lath of five wrapper tobacco stalks. The award for the best single ear of com was captured by Roy Musser, Blue Ball, while the best ten ears were exhibited by Clyde Wissler, New Holland Rl. The Cocalico chapter FFA prepared the top exhibit of 30 ears. -A chunky 875 pound Hereford named Chee-ze took advantage of the four leaf clover found by his mistress as the steer was being MILK.
