DEKALB, 111. Alfalfa needs
special attention from farmers in
late summer in order to stay
healthy through winter, said Jim
Andersen, regional agronomist for
DEKALB-PFIZER GENETICS.
To start, Andersen recommends
that growers take their last cutting
for the season by Labor Day
weekend. This allows the crop to
regrow during fall.
“That gives alfalfa lime to man
ufacture food for the roots, which
helps the crop resist disease and
remain healthy through wintci,”
he said. “Alfalfa needs some rest
at this time, too, so the crowns

herbicide after the crop regrows
about 5 inches. “That’ll kill the
alfalfa and prevent the field from
being weedy next spring. It’ll also
save soil moisture,” he said. “If we
have adequate moisture next
spring, then this is an excellent
field for no-till com.”
