Proper Tire Balancing Boosts 4-Wheel Performance
NEW HOLLAND (Uncaster
Co.) Today’s four-wheel drive
tractor is a marvel of efficiency
and performance, providing it is
properly ballasted to give you
equal weight distribution fore and
aft while allowing for high-speed
field work and optimum wheel
slippage.
It’s not hard to determine prop
er ballasting, but before looking at
that, consider speed and wheel
slip.
You should plan to operate at
the highest field speed possible for
the type of implements you’re
using and the soil conditions. As
the tractor speed increases, the
amount of weight required
decreases. There will be less pull,
and reducing the pull by 2 percent
can result in 50 percent longer life
of your tractor’s drive train
components.
Concerning wheel slip, it’s
been determined that most effi
cient operation is achieved when
wheel slip is maintained between
10 and 15 percent. Too much bal
last literally ties the tractor to the
ground, subjecting the drive train
to all the stress of engine torque
and shock loads. The heavier the

tractor, the more rolling resis
tance, so more power is needed to
move it. Also, of course, too much
weight causes unnecessary soil
compaction and stresses tire bars.
Too little ballast causes excessive
water of tire bars because of slip
page and reduces forward speed.
In general, you want ballasting
that allows you to operate at conti
nuous pulls of S mph and above
with a 10 to 15 percent wheel slip.
As noted earlier, ballasting is
also used to obtain an approximate
50-50 weight distribution between
the front and rear axles when the
unit is operating under load.
There are really three separate
“stages” when you evaluate the
tractor weight distribution. The
bareback stage (A) is when the
tractor has no PTO or no three
point hitch but is simply “as deliv
ered” it has no ballast and is not
in motion. With the Ford Versatile
four-wheel drive tractors, in this
stage, 33 percent of the weight is
on the rear axle and 67 percent is
on the front axle.
The second stage (B) is with
ballasting added to compensate
for the type of work to be done
but the machine is still at rest. The
