Sleeping Sickness Likely
To Occur In
Maryland Horses
The problems experienced last
year with viral encephalitis in
horses, also known as sleeping
sickness, are likely to recur this
year, unless proper preventive
measures are taken. In 1989, more
than 50 cases of viral encephalitis
were reported on the Delmarva
Peninsula through the combined
efforts of practitioners and Mary
land Department of Agriculture
veterinarians.
The June 22, 1990 Center of
Disease Control Encephalitis
Surveillance newsletter reports
that 21 cases of Eastern Equine
Encephalitis (EEE) have been
reported in Florida since January.
One human case of human EEE
has been reported in South Caroli
na in 1990. No other coastal states
have reported evidence of EEE
virus infection in mosquitoes,
equine, or birds at this time.
Viral encephalitis often occurs
during the late summer and early
fall, until the first few frosts. The
encephalitis virus circulates in a
bird-mosquito-bird cycle with vir
al “spill over” into horses and peo

pie. Although horses and people
are victims of this viral disease,
they are not involved in the spread
of the disease. Captive wild birds
such as those on game farms are
often affected with the eastern vir
al type.
There are three types of viral
encephalitis that affect equidae.
They are eastern, western, and
Venezuelan. The eastern type pre
dominates in the eastern United
States with mortality reaching
85-90 percent in infected horses
and people.
Protection from and control of
viral encephalitis are dependent
on the following actions:
1. Local and area mosquito
control measures. The Maryland
Department of Agriculture is
intensifying field spraying to kill
mosquitoes.
2. Persons should use repellents
to protect themselves from mos
quitoes, especially people who are
outside a great deal of the time
such as farmers, fishermen, hun
ters, and golfers.
3. Horses should be vaccinated
in the late spring and those vacci

The exchange provides an

A great deal of sharing and com
