Meat Rabbits Bring Highest Price, Hogs Most Money
VERNON ACHENBACH, JR.
Lancaster Farming StaiT
SOUTH LEBANON (Lebanon
Co.) A meat pen of three rabbits
recently brought the highest price
per pound of any youth livestock
ever sold at the Lebanon Area Fair.
However, market steers still
remain the highest individual
money maker in Lebanon County.
Market hogs, the most common
livestock market project, continue
to gamer the most dollars for the
whole program.
The market rabbit sale joined a
number of “firsts” for the 1990
Lebanon Area Fair. The sale also
nearly became a state record.
At $35 a pound, the three Creme
D’ Argent rabbits, raised by Kris
tin Bucher, 16, have tied the
record* per-pound of the top lives
tock price set during the 1990
Farm Show. That was also done
with a market pen of rabbits.
Bucher’s 9.4 pounds of hoppers
were purchased at a total price of
$329 by representatives of Leba
non Valley National Bank.
However, the highest money
raiser was not the rabbits, but a
champion steer sold by Kelly
Bachman, Annville.
Bachman’s 1,170 pound Black
Angus and Simmental crossbreed
steer sold for $2.60 a pound, or
$3,042, to Wenger’s Farm
Machinery Inc., in Myerstown.
