The judges for the Atlantic
Dairy Cooperative contest were
Tony Schlisicr, cooperative rela
tions manager, David Patrick,
director of Dairymen Inc., and
Rose Dillncr, elementary physical
education administrator.
Michael and Deborah Herring
from Farmington are Dairymen
Inc. winners. Along with Mike’s
parents, they farm 165 acres and
rent 230 acres. They raise 85 per
cent of the feed for their 140 head
of Holsteins and Jerseys. Mike has
total responsibility for the breed
ing program, is a 4-H Dairy Club
leader and a member of the Farm
City Day Committee. Deb was an
outstanding 4-H’er and National
Awards Program winner. She now
has her own beauty shop. The cou-

Eleven couples competed in the
Md.-Va. Milk Producers Coopera
tive Association Inc. contest. They
were Paul and Karen Doltcrcr,
Henry and Patti Elgcrsma, J.
Charles and Barbara Fisher,
Michael and Christine Forsythe,
Allan and Came heaps, Daniel
and Patricia Magncss, Neal and
Linda McCulloch, Craig and
Beverly Mlakcr, Ralph and Temc
Shank, Harold and Colleen Smith,
Timothy and Denise Wetzel, and
Paul and Carla Witter.
Ralph and Terrie Shank, who
live near Hagerstown, with their
two children, Erin and Ryan, are
this year’s Md.-Va. Co-op
winners.

Palmyra Farm. Ralph is responsi
ble for herd management, includ
ing overall health of the animals,
feeding and breeding programs.
They milk 220 Ayrshire cows
with a DHIA average of 13,408
pounds of milk, 528 pounds of fat,
and 455 pounds of protein.
The couple is active at the
Salem United Church of Christ
and said they enjoy being
involved in the Maryland/
Delaware Ayrshire Breeders and
the National Ayrshire Breeders
Associations.
Joyce Bupp, director for Dairy
men Inc., Carroll Gilbert, director
of member relations for Southern
States, and John Morris, 4-H dairy
judge leader and former secretary
of the Maryland Holstein Associa
tion, served as judges for the
Md.-Va. Milk Producers contest.
Don Shrivcr, director of mem
ber relations and public affairs for
Milk Marketing Inc., was the
guest speaker. He just returned
from a bus trip across New York
State with his two sons who loured
m a 32-member boys choir. He
spoke about the importance of
spending more time with family.
In other notable moments dur
ing Ins speech, Shrivcr quoted
Barbara Bush: “Our success
depends not on what happens in
the White House, but what hap
pens in your house.”
Other comments Shrivcr made
were:

going to farm for 100 years, but
live your life as if you were going
to die tomorrow.

up the world, he commented.
