The USDA has adopted interim rules to reduce SE contamination of shell eggs and the risk of egg associated salmonellosis to public health. Experience with these interim rules in several northeast states has identified a number of corrections that need to be made prior to adoption of a final rule. Resolved that the Northeast Association of State Departments of Agriculture recommends adop tion of USDA SE control mea sures as the official state control program in all states and that the following changes be made to the USDA SE Control Program: 1. Flock and product restrictions should be imposed only on infected flocks directly impli cated in an outbreak of egg associated salmonellosis in humans and on infected breed er flocks. 2. When an egg-associated out break of human salmonellosis is traced to a multiple flock premises, only the infected flock should be restricted. 3. Provisions for marketing eggs from restricted flocks should include cooking eggs beyond pasteurization, i.e., hard boiling. Investigation of egg-associated outbreaks of human salmonellosis (SE) indicate that serious viola tions of proper egg handling and food preparation practices are the major cause of these outbreaks. Resolved that the Northeast Association of State Departments Wants Public Input HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Secretary of Agriculture Boyd E. Wolff announced today that the Pennsylvania Animal Health Commission has asked farm orga nizations and other groups to com ment on the future of animal diag nostic services in Pennsylvania. The comments will be heard during a public hearing in Harris burg on June 21.
