If protein costs are high, like they normally are, the value of

Urea complements rations high in rumen by-pass protein by
providing a source of ruminal ammonia needed for bacterial
growth and fiber digestion. This is of particular importance
when fat is added to the ration.
Urea works only in the rumen by helping multiply rumen
bacterial protein - much of which will by-pass the rumen
