All those years of working on
the farm engraved the getting-up
early habit within her. Bedtime is
generally 11:00 p.m.
‘There’s always so much to do,”
she said.
If it isn’t a sewing project, it’s
quilting or cross stitching or a craft

their big garden or helping to cook

demand for lean pork products,
the company developed a method
of determining payment to pork
producers based on carcass merit
evaluation, as well as live weight
of the hog. The percentages of fat
and lean are measured and com
pared to a company standard. Pro
ducers with carcasses above the
standard receive bonuses while
those below the standard are
penalized.

profit organizations.
Ruth’s mother died at age 96.
She also was an accomplished
seamtress and often sewed for
others.
“Even in the nursing home, she
was still hemming dresses until the
end,” Ruth said. “And I hope to do
that also.”
A bit shy about being inter
viewed for a newspaper article,
Ruth said, “I’m nothing special,
really. I’m just ordinary.”
But to Karen, her mother is the
greatest and that’s what really
counts.
