Students Recycle Cans To Save Misty Ranch

Recycling cans may have started
out as a project for Earth Week for
Manheim elementary students, but
it turned into something magical.
On Friday, students were able to
see story tales turn into reality
when the granddaughter of Misty
of Chincoteaque Island came to
visit their schools.
The students learned about Mis
ty’s story and were able to recog
nize the characteristic “map of the
U.S.” markings on Misty 11.
Misty II stepped up on a block
and “shook hands” with several of
the students, as well as showing
her preference for Life Savors
brand candy over sugar cubes.
“I love her, she feels like my
bed, I feel like sleeping on her
every day,” said first grade
Mastersonville student Jennifer
Lowry.

Elise Neiderheiser is only six years
old, but she is a hero. Elise saved
the life of her two-year-old sister,
Erin.
Elise and Erin were playing
upstairs at their home, at 1979 Ml
Hope Road, Manheim, while sis
ter, Justine, and their mother, Mar
ti were tidying the house down
stairs.
Erin entered Elise’s bedroom
and found a marble; Erin showed
Elise the marble. Elise told her sis
ter not to put the marble into her
mouth, but Erin immediately did
what she had been told not to do
and began to choke.
Elise ran downstairs to tell her
mother, then raced upstairs ahead
of her mother and hugged Erin
from the side. Halfway up the
stairs Marti noted Erin was not cry
ing or struggling to breathe; she
immediately administered her own
life-saving technique. Thanks to
the quick thinking of Elise and her
mother, Marti, the two-year-old is
fine and exploring her home.
Elise’s heroic and valiant deed
was shared at a recently held
Brownie Troop #lOl2 meeting. As
a result, the co-leaders, Lisa Sides
and Kathy Balmer along with the
teen leader, Karyn Rosenberg,
realized the need for the Brownies
and mothers to learn first-hand the
proper life saving technique.
At a recent Brownie meeting,
the six- and seven-year-old girls
were taught the Heimlich Maneu v-
annual pony-penning, and made
famous in a children’s book by
author Marguerite Henry.
Misty II is owned by Kendy and
Keith Allen of Manheim. Kendy is
the Pennnnsylvania state fund
raising chairperson for the Misty
Foundation, which was formed in
order to preserve the ranch where
Misty grew up.
The Manheim students decided
that the nine-acre ranch preserva
tion into a historical landmark
would be a worthy cause for their
recycling efforts.
Misty II came to visit both
Sporting Hill and Mastersonville
schools to accept the donations.
More than 610 pounds of alumi
num and 200 pounds of tin have
been collected to date, but the stu
dents want to continue recycling
through the end of the school year,
said Principal Claire Storm.
Sporting Hill School raised $66
and Mastersonville School raised
$l5O for the foundation. Dixon
Recyclers donated $5O to the
effort.

hard hug. She is a CPR instructor
with the American Red Cross.
Sharon patiently presented to
mothers and daughters the peoper
methods to assist a person who is
choking.
First she told the girls they must
dial 911 and Tara Sides told those
assembled to say, “This is an
emergency,” after dialing the
emergency number. Sharon told
the girls they will be required to
give a name, town where they live
and the emergency happening, and
told all assembled that they should
never hang up the telephone. Help
will be dispatched for assistance.
The girls demonstrated first
hand the Heimlich Maneuver
using each other, then their
mothers, and vica versa. The adults
practiced the maneuver on each
other.
Sharon then demonstrated the
method used to assist a person
unconscious from choking.
All present at the meeting
learned a valuable lesson: the gift
of life-saving. Sharon wishes to
remind adults that children are
capable of saving an adult life.
Seoul leaders and members of
Troop#lol2 urge all to learn these
life saving facts.
Mother’s Day holds a special
meaning for the Neiderheiser fam
ily thanks to six-year-old Elise’s
reaction time in an emergency
situation.
