A3O-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 12,1990 SYRACUSE, N.Y. Jerrel Heatwole of Greenwood, Del., has been elected to the Board of Directors of Eastern Milk Produc ers Cooperative. He succeeds Lee Ressler of Conestoga, who retired from fanning after serving on the board for two and a half years. Heatwole represents 200 farm families in District 8, which encompasses southeastern Pen nsylvania and parts of Delaware and Maryland. A 1976 graduate of Rosedale Bible Institute, Irwin, Ohio, Heat wole worked on an uncle’s beef farm for two years and then on a cousin’s dairy farm for another two years before going into the construction business. In 1984 he purchased his own 82-acre farm, where he usually milks 50-60 Holsteins. He joined Eastern in 1987 and Breakfast Meeting Set LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.) —A breakfast meeting for dairy sales and service people has been scheduled by the Lancaster County Extension Service to be held Wednesday, May 16 at the Harvest Drive Restaurant in Inter course. Starting time is 7 a.m. Glenmn Shirk, dairy extension agent, said 1989 presented dairy men with a variety of challenges and opportunities and some of the impact of last year will carry over into 1990. Since dairymen look to sales and service people for advice, this breakfast meeting will help address these concerns. Jud Heinrichs, Penn State will discuss: “What have we learned in 1989 that will help us feed the herd in 1990.” Heninrichs will also dis cuss coccidosis in calves. Robert Anderson, Lancaster extension agent, has the topic: “Evaluating alfalfa stands and alternative feed crops.” The cost of the breakfast is $5.25 and reservations should be made with the Lancaster extension office by Monday. AVAILABLE Two Elected To Eastern Board Of Directors has been active as a delegate, rep resenting Delaware member farmers at Eastern’s general busi ness meetings. In 1988 Heatwole was honored by DHIA for having highest milk production, and in 1987 and 1988, for highest milk fat. Heatwole and his wife, Alma Jean, have four children, Jerrel Jr., David, Gabriel and Carmen. Robert Thomson Jr., of Wya lusing, has also been elected to the Board of Directors. He will complete the unexpired term of R. LaVeme McCarty of Forksville, who served on the board for more than eight years before resigning in the last year of his third three-year term. Thomson will face another election in the fall before begin ning his first full three-year term. As a member of the board, Thomson represents about 175 farm families in District 2 encom passing most of Pennsylvania’s Bradford County and parts of Lycoming, Sullivan, Susquehan na, and Wyoming counties. He operates a 600-acre farm with 130 milking cows and 120 head of young stock, in partner ship with son Keith. A member since 1956, he has been active in the co-op as a local president and delegate, as well as on the board of Eastern Laborat ory Services, a wholly owned subsidiary. Thomson also has been active in other agricultural organizations, including PFA, DHIA, Bradford County Holstein Club, Sire Pow er, Extension Executive Board and State Extension Board. A 1951 graduate of Cornell University, Thomson managed a farm in Ohio for three years before coming to his present farm in 1955.
