Three hundred and four head of purebred cattle were sold at an average of $1,855 a head. The two-day event drew an estimated 7,000 people. Eight major breeds of cattle were featured at the Expo, includ ing Angus, Charolais, Limousin, Polled Hereford, Red Angus, Shorthorn, Salers, and Simmental. It was the first event of its type to be held in Virginia, and drew buy ers from throughout the East Coast. The cattle industry is the single largest agricultural industry in Virginia, with cash receipts total ing $419,693,000 in 1988. Virgi nia ranks 21st nationally among cattle producers, with an inven tory estimated at more than 1.700.000 head of cattle. Of this number, there are approximately 39.000 purebred cattle in Virginia. In addition to the sale of purebred cattle, the Expo also fea tured events of interest to the whole family, including a black tie, Celebrity Beef Cook-off, a working cattle dog demonstration, a cattle working rodeo contest, a team roping/cutting horse demon stration, a trade show, and an “all you-can-eat” beef food festival featuring the Wildwood Girls bluegrass band. Winners of the Celebrity Beef Cook-off were John Huston, pres- Lancaster Fanning Saturday, May 12,1990-Dl9 idem of the National Live Stock and Meat Board, in first place; in second place, Robert Wilcox, president, Lukhard’s Finer Foods, Inc. and past chairman of the board for the Virginia Food Deal ers Association; and William Groseclose, chairman of the advisory council for the Harrison burg and Rockingham Convention and Visitors Bureau in third place. Tied for fourth place were Virgi nia State Sen. Frank Nolen; Regi nald Reynolds, executive secret ary of the Virginia Catdemen’s Association; S. Mason Carbaugh, commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services; Carlton Courier, president of the Virginia Agribusiness Council; Chrys Peterson, news anchor with WHSV-TV3. The winners donated their cash prizes to three charities, including $3,000 to the Virginia Cattle Drive For Hunger; $BOO to the American Heart Asso ciation; and $6OO to the Ronald McDonald House. The judges for the Celebrity Beef Cook-off included Caroline Mayer, staff writer with The Washington Post; Louis Maho ney, food editor of The Richmond News Leader; Manfred E. Roehr, treasurer of the Virginia Chefs’ Association and manager of Shields Tavern in Colonial Wil liamsburg; Craig Moore, owner and chef of the Joshua Wilton House in Harrisonburg; and Shaun Hunt, director of purchasing, Sut ton Place Gourmet in Washington, Virginia, and Maryland.
