Penn State University assistant shepherd Brian Barclay
trims away this ewe’s fleece during a sheep shearing clinic
for members of the Lebanon County 4-H sheep club. The
clinic was held Saturday at the Lebanon Area Fair Grounds.
About 50 people attended.
The need for such a clinic in Lebanon County is growing
stronger, according to extension officials. The county is
known for dairy and swine production but has a growing
number of shepherds, albeit tending small flocks. They are
creating an increasing demand for those with the skill to
shear. After receiving instruction, the 4-H members went to
work on their own animals, with little to no problem, accord
ing to extension officials.
Benjamin Bow, with one of the larger flocks in the county,
was pressed into providing a greet deal of the clinic when it
appeared that Barclay wasn't going to show. Just as Bow fin
ished with the instruction, however, Barclay pulled into the
Fair Grounds. It turns out that on his way south from Penn
State, his shearing equipment fell off the back of his truck,
necessitating a time-consuming backtracking to pick up the
equipment, strewn along a stretch of highway.
