pump their manure uphill to a stor
age pit big enough to hold about
seven to eight worth of
waste.
He said the no-till planting has
cost just as much as regular tilling,
but with the decreased soil erosion,
there has been considerable bene
fits. He said they rotate their com
about every three years and add no
additional nitrogen, other than
manure, which gets a spring
application.
The Caymans also said they are
“max-ed out" with cows.
It takes them four hours to milk,
and they milk twice a day.
The Caymans do their breeding
through the ABS CMC program
and Youg Sire and have about 20
Very Goods and one Excellent
cow and about 70 Good plus.
Their one fulltime, and one part
time hired help work regularly, but
do the milking every other week.
According to Grant, it seems to
work out better, switching weeks
that way, instead of splitting morn
ing and evening shifts.
The last farm on the tour
belonged to Harold Crider, who
also is in partnership with two
sons. Roger and Rodney, to run
Antrim Spring Farm.

the other dairy farms, die Criders
have apparently hung onto older
ways for most of the more than 30
years of business.
It wasn’t untill about 1981 that
Harold switched from bucket
hauling to the milk cooling tank to
having a portable system. And
then, nine days before the tour, he
made the big switch to a pipeline
system that he said is “just great.”
According to Rodney, it cuts
about an hour of milking time.
But much of the Crider’s dairy
business is' tied up in breeding. He
got into (Heeding Holsteins in
1946, while still in high school and
still has animals that are 11th gen

production in the low to
mid-20,000 pound range.
The farm contains 161 acres and
the Criders rent another 75, with
which they grow hay and silage

grain for their 68 milking cows.
Harold said he’s had his herd on
testing since 1957 and classified
since 1963. He said he had been
