The ideal com planting time is
only a few days long. In most
years, each day’s delay past this
period reduced yields up to one
bushel per acre per day.
Normally, com can be safely
planted 10 to 14 days before the
average date of the last killing
frost. In much of the Lehigh Val
ley, there’s still a SO percent
chance of frost on April 14. The
probability drops to 10 percent by
April 28.
Ideally, soil temperatures
should be 50 degrees F or above,
and the five-day extended weather
forecast should indicate continued

Why Patz is No. 1
• Durable Patz hook-and-eye link chain. Progression
forging builds extra strength into hook-and-eye link
contact points. Final heat treating increases hardness,
strength and wear resistance.
• Four-tooth sprocket drives every link behind the hook
the link’s thickest and strongest point.
• Chain flexibility for various layouts.
• Select 2" flites for solid manure or 4" high flites for
slurry manure, Kites are welded to Patz
links. M-Inch-thick wear shoes extend Kite life.
• Three drive unit sizes match your gutter length and
allow expansion.
• Corner wheel top-and-bottom flanges guide the chain
around the corner. Corner wheel assemblies remove
easily for service without concrete breakout.
• Heavier XH link available for extremely long pulls.

Some Corn Planting Reminders
warm, or warmer, conditions.
However, soil physical conditions
for good seed coverage are equal
ly important in deciding to plant
Seed must contact moist soil; 1
io 3 inches of soil coverage is
desirable. Plant shallow (1 inch)
when soil is cold and/or moist;
deeper when soil is warm and/or
dry. Plant shallower in heavy
soils.
When planting in dry soil, the
seed slot opening may fill in
before seed drop, resulting in very
shallow seed coverage and uneven
plant emergence. Planters with
zero velocity seed drop are more
prone to this problem. To prevent
it reposition or replace the planter
sed-drop tubes.

Achieving recommended plant
populations depends on planting
speed and fit of com kernels to the
plate.
Twenty-four-cell planter plates
are recommended. Check seed tag
for producer’s recommendations,
then determine the correct planter
plate for each seed lot by carefully
checking the fit of at least SO ker
nels to the plate cells. Kernels
should fill plate cells loosely.
Check planter for wear, includ
ing plates, knock-out pawls, and
knock-out springs. Air planters
are also plate planters. Follow the
mnaufacturer’s recommendations.
Calibrate planting rates at your
field planting speed.
Speed of planting varies with
New Patz slide of
COR-TEN* steel
resists corrosion
COR-TEN steel provides atmospheric corrosion
resistance for longer slide life.
Patz COR-TEN steel slides are painted to further
protect against corrosion. COR-TEN steel holds
paint longer than ordinary steel. If the paint Is
scratched, COR-TEN steel forms a tightly ad
herent oxide to “heal” Itself.
COR-TEN steel is stronger than mild steel. The
COR-TEN steel slide Is welded to a 4V4 -Inch by
6% -Inch COR-TEN center box beam for extra
rigidity.

planters and desired plant popula
tions. Follow the manufacturer’s
recommendations. To calculate
planting speed in miles per hour,
divide 60 by the number of sec
onds it takes to travel 88 feet
To calculate speed, determine
number of seconds to travel 88
feet: MPH = 80 divided by num
ber of seconds.
Then check actual kernel drop
at the desired planting speed.
As planting rates increase,
planting speeds should increase.
