GEORGETOWN, Del.
More than $l3 million worth of
new poultry house construction on
Delmarva was completed, under
way, or approved in 1989, accord
ing to information compiled by
the Delmarva Poultry Industry,
Inc. (DPI).
Seventy-four new poultry
houses were put into use last year
and 34 were under construction at
the end of the year. There were 23
loans approved for new houses at
year-end, but construction had not
started on them.
The average capacity of these
new houses is approximately
25,000 broilers per house, for a
peninsula-wide increase of
3,267,400.
‘To me, these figures indicate
the continued strength of Delmar
va’s poultry industry,” said DPI
President Harry J. Mitchell of Ber
lin, Maryland.
Each new house costs approxi
mately $lOO,OOO. Mitchell said,
“The fact that growers are willing
to borrow such large amounts of
money per house tells me the
future of Delmarva’s industry is
bright.”

Delmarva Expands Poultry Industry
The increase in houses has an
impact in other areas of the poul
try industry. Additional workers
are needed to handle and process
the chickens and more com and
soybeans are used as feed, creat
ing greater markets for Delmarva
farmers.
While 131 poultry houses were
built, under construciton, or ready
to be built last year, 67 smaller
houses were removed from pro
duction. The net increase in capac
ity on Delmarva was 2,416,000.
The reasons for the house
retirements are varied. They
include the retirement of growers,
fire- or weather-damaged build
ings, and the removal of smaller,
older houses because they are no
longer efficient and competitive
compared to modem houses.
Most of the growth in new
housing occurred in Delaware,
where 88 of the 131 new houses
were built or planned. There were
42 houses in Maryland and one on
the eastern shore of Virginia.
“While much attention is given
to a $l3 million indusltrial expan
sion when it is on one site, very
little attention is paid when it is
scattered throughout an area,”

ducts that Americans use daily
besides degradable plastics.
According to lannotti, the chemi
cal properties of com are very
similar to petroleum products.
‘Things made with carbon most
likely can be made from renew
able resources,” said lannotti.
“This is where I get excited. The
potential is great. Renewable
resources can be used for many of
the conveniences we’re accus
tomed to.”
The first Com Utilization Con
ference was a success. A second
conference in November 1988
also helped further development

meet to discuss current technology
and how it can be used commer
cially. Nothing is black and white,
and no one process will solve
every problem. But if we put forth
an effort to manage our solid
waste and develop uses for renew
able resources, we’ll begin to
reduce the solid waste problems
lacing America today.”
