Paper Bedding
Our son and his family, who
live in Memphis, Tennessee, just
spent a week in Lancaster County.
It was the week of quite warm
weather and so my husband took
the grandchildren for a ride in his
boat. They preferred trying to use
the oars rather than his electric
motor to propel the boat. Of
course, it was fun to splash each
other too.
Another day Kenneth and his
sons spent the time helping on the
farm. He helped to unload a big
truck that brought baled newspap
er for bedding. Then he gathered

brush that lay in the fields from
clearing a fence row.
He and the oldest boy took sev
eral walks through the woods and
along the river bank. On one
excursion, the five year old
slipped down some muddy steps
into the water and got his shoes,
socks and trousers all wet. They
chased rabbits and saw a lot of
squirrels.
I even maqaged to get the sugar
peas all planted before March 17
as my husband and son rototilled a
part of my garden. The sixteen
month old sat quietly in my
express wagon and watched us
work. This red haired, curly

headed boy is so patient. His
father, at the same age, would
have been screaming for attention.
One morning they got up quite
early to see the cows being
milked. I’m sure the pace of life
here was very different from their
normal life. Our son travels a lot
in his job and flies all over the
western United States.
It was a pleasure to see him
showing his son how to skip
stones across the water. My hus
band made a walking stick for our
grandson and he used it to flatten
all of my pea row markers. I guess
one must expect such exuberant
behavior.
Deviled eggs make a great
snack for kids because they’re
high in food value and do not fos
ter tooth decay. Children like them
because they’re easy to pick up
and eat and can be flavored to
their taste. Why not make a batch
today?
