A36-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 31,1990 (Continued from Page A2l) We need producers to guarantee there will be plenty of produce at the auction,” Weaver said. According to Weaver there will be tomatoes, cantalopes, broccoli, peppers, and cauliflower at the auction as well. “We will have most things although no one has said they will be growing egg plant yet.” One couple that hopes to both buy and sell at the auction is Steve and Gayle Ganser. The Gansers own a farm market on Rte. 100 in Trexlertown and supply produce to 15 restaurants in the area. They also grow 68 different things on their small vegetable farm near Kutztown. “We’re looking to sell extra vegetables at the auction when we have too many come in at the same time for us to sell at the market. We have also put in extra beans, watermelon, toma toes, broccoli, squash and cucum bers specifically to sell through the auction. We’re hoping that some nongrowers will get involved with a market so close to home,” Ganser said. The Gansers plan on buying vegetables they just aren’t grow ing enough of to fill the market’s SAVE $2OO L.F Tractors Mfg.’s 1 Year Warranty 001 Ml US uB MODEL CASMf) 250 $5,395 0 $16,922 H $9,848 h, H $22,975 ft $11,495 S $10,995 . $12,825 I $13,479 < $13,975 2 $14,895 ~ 2 Barn ■ r Equip, I lIP T 25 Backhoe Loader 31 400 AN f _ T 42 4WD Bickhoc I ■ Loader. 420 AN 4WD 7O hitti eg 525 A 4WD 70 562 4WD w/Cab 70 FARMWAY 572 4WD w/Cab 70 FIBERDOME 820 4WD 85 822 4WD w/Cab 85 $16,222 922 4WD w/Cab 100 , $23,142 > Engine For Air Skid Loader3l $3,650 Z Placement Cooled Power fs Plant 57 $4,995 Toy Tractor 1/43 Scale $15.95 RO VEND ALE SUPPLY J-STAR JAMESWAY STARLINE Bnt 31. It will take a while to get going,” his wife added. The Gansers added a few tips for first time growers. “Veget ables take a lot of labor, hand labor. It is the thing that dictates how much you can do. Also start with a major vegetable because you know there will be a market,” Ganser said. The Gansers choices for a first time grower included tomatoes, cantaloupe, sweet corn, and broccoli, Weaver cautioned growers to listen to the buyers. “Buyers are looking for quality. Produce should be picked a few hours before market.” With that in mind Weaver said the auction has great potential. “We will be selling to wholesalers not retailers. We hope to serve as a bridge between growers and buyers.” Burkholder added that the Dr ? Cow 4 Years & Under group had visited a number of n CKomaim Renegade Sony „ .■ . . , . At certain times of the season, say when the cantaloupes come in, we may be open 5 or 6 days. We don’t anticipate having 100 much of any crop unless everything comes in at once. We do recommend spreading things out with continual plantings.” The auction will close down around Thanksgiving depending on when the killing frost occurs.
