remarkable thing that walks on this
earth,” said Dr. Ronald Dubbe.
“This cow was designed to pro
duce milk suffcient for a calf
about 1800 lbs. of milk per year.
But we have this cow that is now
genetically capable of giving
18,000 lbs. of milk and more. So,
our cows work at more than 10
times their natural capacity. This
puts stress on us as dairymen—
stewards of the cow—to properly
care for that production capacity
without getting into trouble.”

she was meant to be fed,” Dubbe
said. “It avoids problems with
individual ingredients and helps
the cow to consume all the nutri
ents she needs to produce milk.”
On the subject of BST, Dubbe
thinks it will be approved and
used. But he believes in some
herds it may produce a negative
effect.
"Many herds have a cap placed
on their production by some aspect
of management.” Dubbe said.
