types of herbicides to use and
when to apply them.
“It’s a game of being a little
smarter than the weed, finding out
how the weed is growing, and what
the best time of year is to get at the

he said.

In total, ninety-six sponsors
helped raise $22,000 to help cover
the costs of the 1989 fall regional
and national contests.
Two new laws must be clear to
farmers. “If you have pesticide
certification, and someone else
who is not certified sprays for you,
you are completely responsible for
that person," said Burckhart
Also, thorough pesticide record
keeping is essential under the new
law. The date of pesticide applica
tion, the place of application, the
brand name and formulation of
pesticide used, the amount of pes
ticide used, the dosage and rate of
the pesticide, and applicator ID
number must be included in the
record book.
“Be sure of where you’re stor
ing pesticides,” Burckhart said,
noting that pesticides should be
kept in a secured area and locked
up at all times.
