Starting in a rented barn with twelve heifers in Oct. 87
Bob Kittle RD #3 Columbia X Rds. Pa.
has achieved 23,795 lb. milk and 825 lbs. fat on
31 cows on his 5-04-89 DHIA test.
Bob Says, “We buy top quality alfalfa hay, feeding 3%
Ibs./hd. twice a day, we feed 30 lbs. of corn silage two
times a day and Purina test cow 20% three times a day.”
Cows are fed according to recommendations from Tony
Rishel farm consultant for Check-R-Board Knoxville. As
a top feed Bob uses Purina Maxi-Tech 32% FF Checkers
for high producers fed at 3#/Hd/Day. In the winter
Purina Milk Pack NS is fed at recommended rates to
open cows for stronger heats.
“We milk 3X a day January thru July, 2X for the balance
of the year. Cows have kept good body condition even
under high production. Working with Tony we visually
check body condition every month and make feed ad
justments accordingly.” Bob continues, “Forage tests
are done quarterly and as new hay is considered for
purchase.”
