QUINCY, m. Mid-February
marks the beginning of the hom
fly season in the southern states,
with infestation in the northern
areas beginning in spring and last
ing through summer. When hom
flies attack, they torment cattle,
resulting in sizable losses in feed
efficiency, rate of gain, and milk
production.
During the last few years, a bar
rage of products have been intro
duced to prevent performance los
ses from the pesty flies. The pro
ducts fall into three categories;
eartags, which are impregnated
with an insecticide; topical pro
ducts such as sprays and those
which are applied with dustbags
and backrubbers; and feed
through products.
According to Dr. A. L. French,
an entomologist at Moorman
Manufacturing Co., feed-through
products offer several advantages
that a producer won’t find in ear
tags or topical products.
A feed-through product is
ingested by the animal and passed
in the manure, where horn flies
make their breeding ground. The
Use Feed-Through Product For Horse Flies *
product prevents the flies from
developing past the immature
pupal stage, thus eliminating adult
fly development
Some feed-through products
have not been associated with
resistance problems, a major
drawback in using eartags. In
some areas of the country—parti
cularly in the southern states
several eartag customers have
reported that the devices were not
effective after even a few years
use because of resistance to the
insecticide in the eartags. Repents
of resistance problems are fewer,
however, from producers using
one particular feed-through pro
duct' This product Moor Man’s
IGR Minerals*, has a 14-year his
tory with no resistance problems
reported.
Feed-through products require
no extra labor for administration.
They can be self-fed using con
ventional methods. Sprays and
eartags require additional hand
ling for application and may
require additional equipment.
Compared to average prices fra
eartags and topical products,
Moor Man’s feed-through pro
ducts are very competitive. Moor
man’s IGR Mineral Products
incorporate the benefits of horn
fly control plus 10S years of min
eral nutrition in one convenient
product.
Another major advantage in
using a feed-through product is
the benefit derived from the nutri
ents in the product. Not only do
IGR minerals prevent horn flies
from developing, they also supply
cattle with a scientific balance of
minerals to help maximize growth
and enhance the utilization of
nutrients from other feeds.
