Eight York County farms were
honored as Century Farms, recog-

family ownership for at least one
hundred years. Century Farm hon

Glen Rock, and the Airville farm

Apply Now On Frozen Ground
Lime can be applied almost anytime, however winter
months are ideal, because the ground is firm and
the freezing and thawing action helps to disseminate
the lime in the soil.

Congressman Gunderson cited
changing markets and changing
policy as the two key challenges
facing agriculture in the 19905.
Markets will increasingly shift
from domestic to international.
The 1990 Farm Bill, he notes,
must give negotiators for the Gen
eral Agreement on Tariffs and
Trade (GATT) the tools to assure
that American farmers will be
fairly treated in the Uraguay round
of trade talks.
Management and technology,
says Congressman Gunderson,
will allow U.S. farmers to outpro
duce those of any other nation.
The use of biolotechnology can
help solve the problems of feeding
an estimated 1.5 billion increase in
the world’s population over the
next decade, as well as pressing
environmental issues.
According to the Wisconsin
Congressman, the 1990 Farm Bill
must be market oriented and pro
vide a “level playing field” for
U.S. fanners to compete in world
markets. It will be written, he pre
dicts, on the floors of Congress,
not by agriculture representatives
but by urban representatives
addressing the issues of environ
ment, food safety and animal
rights.
