through feed and care, but in the
end, I guess she just won because
we give her a lot of love,” said
Melany.
Cheviot
Donna MacCauley took home
several farm show awards. On
Saturday it was the supreme
champion meat breed sheep with
her Cheviot yearling ewe, and
once again she won for her Cheviot
champ.
Even though there were fewer
entries in this category than any
other, the judge carefully consid
ered four entrants and picked Don
na’s prize Cheviot because of the
ewe’s “meatiness and strength.”
She won both grand and reserve
champion categories.
Donna is 19 and said she has
raised sheep since she was bom.
Dorset
* 'The champion has a lot of sub
stance to her, at the top and overall
length of body. There is more body
depth and less of leg,” said Judge
Chappel.
Chappel refers to Jenny Zerby’s
Red Oak fall Dorset yearling ewe,
who took grand champion. The
ewe also won at Keystone and
other fairs. “We just give it care
and feeding we take care of it
constantly.” said Jenny, 13. The
ewe’s mother has fostered other
champions of which her family
raised. Jenny has been raising
sheep since she was bom.
Lori Tyson, 13, took reserve
champion for the ewe lamb. Prin
cess Di. Lori has been raising
sheep for 10 years, and Princess Di
has won the grand championship at
the Sussex Fair in New Jersey and
Kutztown State Fair.
"We worked real hard,” said
Lori. “It takes years to get a
champion like this.”
Hampshire
Matthew Nickeson, 9, stands
alone. Not only did he win the
grand champion Hampshire year
ling ewe class, but holds the
reserve placing as well.
“The breed’s structure and pat
tern, lines, thickness, and feminity
are dominant,’’ said Judge
Chappel.
“We give it a lot of proper feed
and care,” said Matthew, who has
been raising sheep for seven years.
The ewe was exhibited at the
Louisville, Kentucky national
show and won a championship at
Keystone.
Junior Sheep Breeding Championship
Corriedale
Benjamin Bow, 12, has been
raising sheep for eight years, and
even though his yearling ewe won
for the first time in any competi
tion at the farm show, he was hap
py that “good care” got it there.
“This was a good body sheep,
with good overall strength and
looks,” said Judge Chappel, who
was impressed at the “meat body’ ’
of (he sheep.
Kelly Glaser, 9, has been raising
sheep since a toddler, and won
reserve champion. Kelly won
reserve placings in two other
championships, at the Allentown
and Kutztown fairs.
Montadale
“I was impressed with the
graceful length of body and natural
thickness of the sheep,” said
Judge Chappel, looking over the
Montadale category.
Heather Fidler, 13, won grand
champion for her yearling ewe
Daisy. She has been raising sheep
for only two years, and won first
place at a “couple” of state fairs
and placed in the championship at
Louisville, Kentucky. “We
bought her at the nationals, so we
are happy she won.”
Jeanette Fidler, 9. raised her ewe
lamb, Becky, for the reserve title.
This is only her first year, though
Becky also won second place at the
Louisville, Kentucky champion
ship. “We just brought her up
right,” said Jeanette.
Merino
Suzanne Dollar, 11, won grand
champion Marino with her year
ling ewe, Pauley. Suzanne has
been raising sheep for five years
and won the championship at last
year’s state farm show.
“We feed Agway pellets to it
and keep it out of the rain,” said
Suzanne. “It’s a good wool breed,
though, and we tend it really
carefully.”
The sheep showed “supreme
feminity and strength, ’ ’ said Judge
Chappel. There were no reserve
champions.
Rambouillet
Billy Leib, 9, is proud to earn the
Rambouillet grand champion for
his yearling ewe. Billy has been
raising sheep “all his life” and has
exhibited his ewe at the Louisville,
Kentucky championship. “We got
the right parents and were careful
with the stock,” he said.
The body tops were “massive
and well-rounded, with strong
legs,’’ according to Judge
Chappel.
Billy also won reserve champ
ion for his ewe lamb.
The following is a list of show
placings.
