Casey opened the 74th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show last Sunday, and announced more than $3.7 million in funding for improvements to the Farm Show Complex. “This year’s Farm Show is dedicated to the theme of ‘Good Food for Our Families,’” Gov. Casey said. “The number of farm :ng families and, most especially, the children of those families who are here means that the future of farming in Pennsylvania will be in good hands. “And as agriculture moves ahead into the 19905; it’s time that we made the Farm Show Complex fit for the next decade." Gov. Casey said nearly $2.7 million of the renovation funding will be used to provide the new roof for the Farm Show Complex, located on approximately 80 acres in the city. The complex has 450,000 square feet of exhibition area, with a large arena fen- show ing livestock and other events. Gov. Casey also released Mr. and Mrs. Earl Keefer (right) receive the Charles E. Three persons were honored for service to the dairy industry. They are Earl Keefer, Millersburg, who received the Charles E. Cowan Award; H. The project will convert the pre sent steam heat to a hot water sys tem. The governor also released $350,000 to replace the lighting system of the Farm Show Com plex. The project will provide increased levels and uniformity of lighting throughout the complex. It will also include the use of ener gy efficient, long-life lights. Gov. Casey said the projects will be done simultaneously to increase efficiency of the con struction. The governor, during a tour of the exposition, stopped to sample a famous Farm Show baked potato and looked at various farm machinery. For the fourth time in five years he para ded a steer out that became grand champion of the Farm Show junior steer competition. Messick and his steers earned the title in 1986, ’B7, and ’BB, and he may have won last year had he brought a steer to show. Judge Scott Schaake, from the University of Kentucky, com mended Messick’s heavyweight steer, Simon, for having good mus cling, being sound in structure, and having the finished look that steers going to market should have.
