Corson, 17, of Braddock Heights (Frederick County) was one of four 4-H members from across the nation to receive $l,OOO scholarship awards for excellence in the fashion revue project Maryland also had a nation al winner in this project area last year. Sponsoring organizations both years were the Viking White Sewing Machine Company and Simplicity Patton Co., Inc. Heather has organized her coun ty’s 4-H fashion show for the past three yean. She has planned and conducted fashion workshops for other 4-H members, and she has earned considerable money from professional modeling. Inspired by her study of Italian clothing design during an International 4-H Youth Exchange program, she has begun designing her own clothes. Glisan, 17, of New London (Frederick County) was one of five 4-H members from across the nation to receive $l,OOO scholarships from the Ortho Consumer Products Divi sion of the Chevron Chemical Com pany for excellence in gardening and horticulture programs. As part of her 4-H work, Heidi has made an extensive study of dah lia culture and has developed skills in floral design. She has also studied the culture of dish gardens, cactus gardens and terrariums. She has con ducted horticulture workshops for other 4-H members. Dairy Jenell R. Rinehart, 16, of Taneytown (Carroll County) was one of six 4-H members from across the nation to receive $l,OOO scholar ships from Land O’ Lakes, Inc., and the American Cyanamid Company for excellence in the 4-H dairy pro gram. As part of her project, Jcndl is re sponsible for managing a milking herd of 85 Holstein cows. She has won both the junior and senior championships in 4-H dairy cattle judging at the Maryland Slate Fair, and she was a member of the Mary land team which won the national 4-H cairy cattle judging champion ship on Oct. 3 at Madison, Wis. Jenell has organized food and blood drives in her school, and she has produced a “cow” puppet show to entertain senior citizens and in form younger 4-H members about the 4-H dairy project In addition to her dairy skills, Jcn ell is talented in sewing. She won grand champion honors last year in the 4-H Fashion Revue at the Mary land State Fair, and she was a blue ribbon winner in the same event this year. Petroleum Power Ernest H. Beck, 17, of Jessup (Howard Coun ty) was one of six 4-H members from across the nation to receive $1,500 scholarships from the Amo co Foundation, Inc., for excellence in the 4-H petroleum power project As an outgrowth of his 4-H work, Ernie operates his own small engine business. He has repaired, overhaul ed and rebuilt riding and push-type lawn mowers, as well as weed-eat ers, tillers, chain saws, go-carts and motorcycles. Ernie was senior 4-H small en gines champion at the Maryland State Fair in 1987, and he has taught the basic parts of small engines to a boy with learning disability. Sheep Michael T. Mike also was one of 12 outstand ing young persons who received the prestigious 4-H silver tray award, given on behclf of the President of the United States. In addition to the silver tray, he received a $1,500 scholarship from the Reader’s Di gest Foundation. Career Matthew E. lager, 18, of Fulton (Howard County) was one of six 4-H members from across the nation to receive $l,OOO scholarships from the DeKalb Genetics Corpora tion for general excellence in 4-H club projects. A Maryland 4-H member also won this award last year. A senior at Atholton High School in Columbia, Matt plans to attend Delaware Valley College and pre pare to qualify for admittance to a school of veterinary medicine. As part of his 4-H work. Matt as sists with the family’s 1,100-acre dairy, crop and turkey farm. He has helped to train the county 4-H dairy judging teams; he placed third in the THINK AHEAD... Segal, 17, of Four Comers (Mont gomery County) was one of six 4-H members from across the nation to receive $1,500 scholarships from Kraft General Foods for excellence in food and nutrition projects. Becky was runner-up in the senior 4-H food and nutrition demonstra tion competition this year at the Maryland State Fair with a “cal cium-connection” party cheese ring. As part of her 4-H work, she de veloped a nutrition and fitness game which she used in an “Exploring 4-H” program for elementary school students. She conducted a nutrition survey at the county fair, helped edit and direct a nutrition video program, and led after-school nutrition work shops. the national 4-H scholarship win ners were selected by representatives of the Cooperative Extension Ser vice at land-grant universities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
