Lancaster County tobacco far

made history twice this week, and
obtained an additional nearly $1
million for local tobacco growers
on top of their on-farm prices for
Type 41 Pennsylvania tobacco.
According to Eric Probst Para
dise Tobacco Sales auction mana
ger, Type 41 tobacco has never
been sold at auction and has

always been sold on the farm. That
changed this week. This year more
than six million pounds of Type 41
tobacco were sold on the farm
prior to the auction for $l.lO per
pound. However, thanks to Para

brought Type 41 to market for the

an addition of nearly $1 million in
the pockets of the county’s tobacco
farmers.
While wet and rainy weather
interrupted tobacco plantings early
in the season, it is the dry weather
now which is holding up the flow
of tobacco coming to market
Without the proper dampness in

the tobacco is dry and crumbly.
Despite the dry weather, Probst
reports good volume for the first
sales. Type 609 Maryland leaf
brought $1.50 per pound for
250,000 pounds in two days. Mon
day’s price was warehouse sup
ported, but five buyers bought all
the Type 609 at $1.50 per pound on
Wednesday.
A shortage of of Type 609 in the
southern slates and a shortage of
both types in the county arc sup
porting strong prices locally. This
was also the first week Paradise
Sales Tobacco Sales history,
according to Probst, that a direct
processing company buyer was on
the line to buy Type 609.
“The shortage in the south is
helping the demand here,” said
Probst. “The burly market price is
strong at $1.67 in Tenncscc and
Kentucky, where much of the
bounty’s tobacco ends up. With
our tobacco here bringing $1.50 I
think farmers could sec an increase
in price on both Type 41 and Type
609.”
Probst’s advice to tobacco
growers is to keep the tobacco
coming to market. “Take a load
every sale and work on the
averages.”
