D2B- Lancaster Farming Saturday, Novembar 18,1989 (Continued from Pag* D 26) the university’s 600-acre campus, is being turned from a near dust bowl existence into a functioning, growing farm facility. “The farm house renovations will allow us to house a resident staff, making the facility a working model,” boasts Macoskey. Upgrading the house already under way includes extensive renovations. “We will be install ing photovoltaic cells to generate a portion of the home’s electricity and will be using all types of ener gy saving and energy conserving devices as part of the design and utilization of natural resources,” says the self-made, farm-energy manager. Macoskey’s eyes are not only on providing a working model. He hopes the expansion will draw additional funding to the project. “We are really in a position to offer farming alternatives to the agricultural world.” He points out the “sweat of the faithful” has gone into the project thus far. “There is a hand-dug pond at the farm. It is 30-feet long, 15-fcet wide and 5-feet deep. It was dug in the heat and in the rain by volunteers, including women, scooping up the clay in their hands and carrying it away.” The pond, however, follows the multiple-use credo of ALTER. “There is also what is known as a KEN CLUGSTON (717) 665-6775 CRAFT-BILT CONSTRUCTION INC. It is very dense so it provides a sound barri er; it also provides a site barrier; and is a constraint barrier for keeping in poultry and keeping out other wildlife. It is interp lanted with Russian olive to attract useful creatures -- insect preda tors: thus the fence indirectly pro vides a means of getting rid of unwanted mosquitos. And with all of this, Macoskey seeks more. “We are grafting pears to the hawthorn, thus the fence will provide edible fruit It was placed so that it provides shade for the on-farm pond thus it helps slow evaporation, and, of course, the pond provides the water for the growth of the fence.” There are fish in the pond that will someday provide food for the farm’s owners and the food the fish eat is provided by the under water plants and insects drawn naturally to the water. ‘This is just one example of the kind of thing that can be done when permaculture farming is introduced. It is really an attempt to blend common sense with some knowledge and understanding of the environment. Nearly every project on the farm has at least two primary purposes, and some have a half dozen or more.” The philosophy-professor turned-agriculturist, chuckles when asked how far the project can actually go. He truly sees the sky as the limit. One proposal, though admitted ly far-fetched at present, is for a $3O million permaculture center on the SRU campus designed not only for classroom and learning laboratory work, but also as a visi tors’ learning center. “We could show the world how permaculture can succeed. We are the only university vigorously pursuing the subject, but there is growing interest on other agricultural-related college cam puses,” says the enthusiastic Macoskey. To show the worldwide Impor tance of the project, he points out that the laboratory’s chief farmer, Last year, more value minded farmers picked Massey-Ferguson than any other make. In fact, one of every five tractors now sold in the Western World is an M-F. Which makes Massey- Ferguson the Western World’s largest tractor manufacturer. One of the big reasons for this popularity is the great value of the 50-90 PTO hp line of M-F 300 Series tractors. They all give you the torque, economy and relia bility of world-famous Perkins diesel engines and all the advantages of advanced Ferguson system hydraulics. Plus you get the practical features you want, like hydrostatic steering as standard equipment. LEBANON VALLEY IMPLEMENT CO. 700 E. Linden St. Richland. PA Ph; (717) 866-7518 M.M.
