Weekend Brings Firsts, Lasts To Lancaster County 4-H Livestock Clubs
BY USA KISSER
NEW HOLLAND (Lancaster
Co.) Last weekend was a time
of firsts and lasts. It was Heather
Yoder’s first time to have the
grand champion at the Southeast
District beef show, but her champ
ion was the show’s last as its exis
tence comes to a close.
The curtain dropped on the
show, which peaked at 200 steers,
due to a lack of participation. Once
the biggest beef show around, the
Southeast District show has been
drawing youth only from Chester
and Lancaster counties for a num
ber of years now. Also being dis
continued is the New Holland
Baby Beef Club, which would
have had only one member next
year.
The Southeast District beef
show, which has a history of more
than 4S years, also brought a first
fra* Diane Musser of Elizabeth
town, who showed her first reserve
grand champion in the eight years
she’s been participating in the Lan
caster County beef clubs.
Yoder, the 14-year-old daughter
of Marian and Galen Yoder of
Denver, selected her Angus-
Chianina steer, Ace, at the Key
stone International Livestock
Exposition last year. A member of
the New Holland and Red Rose
baby beef clubs, Yoder is making
her final appearance as a 4-H’er as
other activities take up too much of
her time to continue in 4-H.
The champion steer was pur
chased by Tim Kreider, represent
ing Willie the Butcher, for $1.75
per pound. Yoder plans to use her
earnings towards the purchase of a
pleasure horse.
Musser, a member of the Wool
ies 4-H Club and Lancaster County
4-H Swine Club as well as the beef
clubs, ran out of names and so
didn’t bother to name her Angus-
Chianina cross. Her nameless win
ner impressed Darvin E. Boyd,
vice president and director of
Hamilton Bank’s agri-finance
department. Boyd purchased the
1,160-pound steer from the
16-year-old daughter of Harold
and Judy Musser for $l.lO per
pound and then donated it back to
the beef clubs for their annual
banquet.
A total of 36 steers were sold for
$35,542.20 or an average of $.84
per pound. The volume steer buyer
was Willie the Butcher, who
bought eight animals, while Stoltz
fus Meats purchased four steers.
More firsts, lasts
The Lancaster County lamb
roundup last Friday presented
Jodie Weaver of New Holland
with her last county champion of
the year. The county’s beef round
up, held earlier in the day, saw the
17-year-old daughter of Larry and
Barb Weaver and Carol Diffcn
bach winning the coveted county
champion beef showman title.
This honor makes Weaver the last
in her family to receive the award
as her sister, Kristin Chupp, and
father won the award in previous
years.
Weaver was particularly proud
of her champion, a Suffolk cross
wether, because she selected him
herself. She plans to bank the
$501.50 she received from top bid
der Darvin E. Boyd of Hamilton
Bank and put it toward her college
education. Boyd donated the lamb
back to the Woolies Club to be
butchered for its annual banquet,
held with the beef clubs.
For being top county beef show
man, Weaver received the Intell
steer from Lancaster Newspapers’
Intelligencer Journal. She was
Jodie Weaver sold her grand champion lamb to Darvin E.
Boyd, vice president and director of Hamilton Bank’s agrl
flnance department, for $4.25 per pound.
The Angus-Chlanlna steer shown by Diane Musser was
selected as the reserve grand champion of the Southeast
District beef show. The steer was purchased by Darvin E.
Boyd of Hamilton Bank for $l.lO per pound. Boyd donated
the steer back to the county’s beef clubs to be butchered for
their annual banquet.
making plans last Saturday to
leave soon after the sale to travel to
Ohio and find a likely steer.
Amy Bollinger of Manheim also
experienced a first when her
Hampshire wether was named the
reserve grand champion of the
county roundup. The daughter of
Eugene and Carol Bollinger, she
walked her lamb often and had him
jump hurdles. The second-year
4-H’er sold her lamb to Tim Kreid
er. representing Willie the Butch
er. The 118-pound reserve champ
ion brought $3.50 per pound.
The lamb sale grossed $8,378
on 81 lambs for an average of $1
per pound. Willie the Butcher pur
chased 20 lambs, Walter Dunlap &
Sons bought 19 lambs. Jack
Godeck of Marlborough, NJ.,
took home 10 lambs, and New
Holland Sales Stable purchased 9
lambs.
