LANCASTER (Lancaster)
Among the many scenic attrac
tions in Lancaster County are the
30 covered bridges remaining to
day. These bridges, found
throughout the county, synthesize
craftsmanship, art and utility.
They are being preserved through
the efforts of those who love and
appreciate their natural beauty and
their homage to a more simple
past
In a' unique cooperative effort
three local craftsmen have com
bined their talents to preserve
these bridges in another way.
They have produced a calendar il
lustrated with original pen and ink
drawings of several of the covered
bridges, rendered as they appear
today.
Frank and Nancy Shaub, own
ers and operators of Frank Shaub,
Jr., Printing in Manheim, were in
the habit of giving art reproduc
tions as gifts to their business as
sociates. But Frank, a member of
the Lions Club, was also brain
storming some way to assist the
Lancaster County Association for
the Blind, one of the Lions’ ser
vice recipients. Together with his
wife Nancy, Frank hit on the idea
of providing a scenic calendar for
the Blind Association to sell as a
fund-raiser.
A friend recommended Lan
caster artist and graphics designer
G. Robert (Bob) Wagner, a part
ner of Gas Graphics Art Shop, to
provide the art for the calendar.
(Readers may be familiar with
Bob’s popular poster “Covered
Bridges of Lancaster County.”)
Bob spent 20-30 hours drawing
each of the bridges in the calendar,
and the technical excellence of the
renderings is a tribute to his appre
ciation of these historic treasures.
A unique aspect of this calendar
is that it has not only raised funds
for the blind, but it is designed so
that it can be used by low-vision
or vision-impaired people. Each
date is 11/16” tall, printed in solid
black. There are no boxes around
the dates to distract the eye, and
holidays are found in the upper or
lower left-hand comer for clarity.
Nancy Shaub, in consultation with
the Blind Association, came up
with these specifications, as well
as the choice of paper, a off-white
non-glare surface for easy read
ing.
With the help of volunteers, the
Shaubs printed and donated 1,600
calendars in the past two years and
the Blind Association has sold
every one. This hefty effort by two
small Lancaster County business
es has been such a success that the
calendars are being marketed out
side the county for the first time
this year. The Blind Association
will jointly invest in the larger ef
fort and recruit the help of sight
impaired workers in the coordina
tion and shipment of calendar or
ders. To obtain The Covered
Bridge Calendar write: The Lan
caster County Association for the
