HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
“Whether you are interested in
purebred seed stock, rams for
commercial use, or lean market
lambs, Hampshires fill the bill.
Hampshires are in demand now
and die breed has a bright future,”
stated John Nordin at the opening
of the Hampshire show at the Key
stone International Livestock
Exposition Saturday morning in
Harrisburg.
The American Hampshire
Association is celebrating its
100th anniversary this year and
Hamp owners were out in force to
honor the breed. Among the spe
cial events was the Hampshire
Regional Futurity Show. Dedi
cated to former association presi
dent and long time board member,
Nordin, the futurity was just one
of 12 held across the country in
preparation for the nadonal event
scheduled for Louisville next
month.
Four Pennsylvanians proved
their ability to pick winners well
in advance. Tim and Sarah Fleen
er, Robesonia, R.D. 1, showed the
champion ewe in both the open
and futurity classes. According to
Tim it wasn’t that tough to pick
the yearling as a future champion.
“She just kind of stuck out,”
Fleener explained.
“Her mother also had a good
show record,” added Fleener’s
father-in-law, Clyde Brubaker.
‘This ewe was the champion
here as a lamb and she was second
at the national competition at the
Maryland State Fair,” Fleener
said.
The Fleener’s yearling was fol
lowed by a late spring lamb owned
by Glenn Musselman, Lancaster.
Musselman who has only been in
the sheep business for five years
wasn’t daunted by choosing a
winner by the 60-day deadline.
“I like to guess as I see the
hooves coming out,” he joked.
“Actually you can pretty much tell
within 24 hours whether or not
you have a show animal.”
Both animals will be traveling
to Louisville for national
competition.
The top ram in the open com
petition went to the longtime
sheep breeders at the Price Stock
Farm of Westminster, Maryland.
Judge Dan Strahl liked the size
and scale of Price Jackpot, a year
ling ram.
He followed Jackpot with
another yearling owened by Glenn
Musselman. Strahl said the Lan
caster entry was the most correct
ram in the show calling particular
attention to the animals feet and
legs.
In the futurity classes, Tim and
Sarah Fleener had another champ
ion with the yearling that placed
third in the open show. Strahl

Hampshires Celebrate Centennial At KILE
appreciated the animal’s body
capacity and breed character.
The reserve went to Mr. and
Mrs. Clyde Brubaker of Robeso
nia, Pa. with a growthy spring
ram.
Matthew Nickeson, Wellsboro,
Pa., had the champion sale animal,
a spring ewe lamb.
It was followed by a yearling
owned by Claudette Choma, Staf
ford Springs, Conn.
Choma was also named as the
premier breeder and exhibitor
“I’m really surprised. I broughi
nine animals with me. Maybe 1
overwhelmed them with quanti
ty,” she laughed. Choma’s ani
mals were consistantly near the
top of the very large classes.
Judge Strahl admired both the
number of entries and the quality
of the animals exhibited at the
event. Surveying the yearling ewe
class with over 40 entries, Strahl
picked out the top IS animals. He
then addressed the audience ai
ringside. “Don’t you wish that you
could have as many of these as
you wanted. I wouldn’t pick and
choose between this group. 1
would just back my truck up the
ring and take them all.”
