Ohio Exhibitor Shows KILE Supreme Champion Barrows
BY LISA RISSER
HARRISBURG After two
days of competition, judge Henry
Gruber went through hundreds of
pigs to select the top barrow at the
Keystone International Livestock
Exposition. The four participants
in the final evaluation were the
junior champion barrows and the
open show champions.
The supreme champion rosettes
went to the purebred open champ
ions shown by Dr. Thomas Parks
of Jeffersonville, Ohio. The best
barrow was Parks’ 225-pound
Duroc, which was driven by his
partner, Bob Moore. The medium
weight pig isaPBES Hamalot4s-4
son out of PBE Princess Ralph
10-1.
Slipping into the reserve
supreme champion barrow spot
was the pair’s champion Landrace,
a PBE7 Dunderbo of K 32-1 son
out of PBE6 Ms Darby of K 54-9.
This is the first year of KILE
competition for Parks and Moore,
who raise purebred Durocs and
Landraces. It is not, however, their
first brush with the champion spot
light. This year alone they have
had the Dixie National grand
champion carcass Duroc barrow,
the Land of Lincoln champion
Duroc carcass, the second-place
Landrace production barrow at the
National Barrow Show, and the
overall grand champion Duroc at
the Mid South Show.
Competing against Parks and
Moore was Brian Beam of Elver
son and his champion junior bar
row. This is Beam’s first year of
exhibiting at KILE. “I figured I’d
get blown away up here,” he said
with surprise. Instead, his Hamp/
York 212-pound cross was named
winner of the lightweight class and
champion.
The 17-year-old son of Titus
and Violet Beam, he is a fourth
year FFA’er who has been show
ing hogs for about 10 years. He has
had the champion at the 1988
Berks County HFA hog roundup as
well as three champions at Chester
County 4-H hog roundups.
The reserve champion junior
barrow was shown by Kristen
Hazelett of State College.
A partial list of the winners
