ing too fast for you, take a day to
slow down, to spend a day with
your family in a tranquil rural set
ting, and to eat some of the finest
homemade traditional American
foods. Come visit the Hay Creek
Apple Festival at Historic Joanna
Furnace on October 14 from 7
a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visitors’ mouths will water
as they walk through the festi
val grounds. The main theme of
this festival is dedicated to ap
ples and apple foods. Mixed
with the aroma of all the won
derful foods are the scents of
open wood fires used to cook
the soups and the hundreds of
gallons of famous Hay Creek
apple butter. The Festival cooks
urge visitors to come early to
get a taste of Millie Shirey’s
all-you-can-eat apple pancake and
sausage breakfast. After breakfast,
they can visit the annual flea mar
ket and antique dealers’ stands,
talk to the early American crafts
men and take the self-guided
walking tour-of the historic fur

butter off the fires and getting it
ready for sale.
After sampling the apple butter
on some of Sarah Bannon’s still
warm homemade bread, it’s off to
Janis Shirey’s Pageant of Thresh
ing where visitors can see how the
process of threshing grains has
changed since biblical times.
Nearby, steam powered sawmills,
shingle mills and a bucksaw will
be operating.
By noon, visitors can follow
their noses to the food stands and
enjoy almost any type of apple
meal, dessert or treat imaginable.
After lunch, everyone young and
old, can enjoy numerous early
American games from horseshoes
to mill game to parchesi. Between
the games folks are invited to join
the small groups of bluegrass and
traditional musicians and even
sing along. And after a mid after
noon snack, anyone can talk to the
resident archaeologists who are
working on the Historic Joanna
Furnace site or simply join in the
