Patton from Monsanto Ag Pro
ducts division discussed the issue
of bovine somatotrophin (BST) in
relation to animal nutrition and the
future of this product of biotech
nology. Patton said we haven’t
done anything to the cow, only to
the bacteria that produce BST.
“BST is 100 percent just like you
find it in the cow,” Patton said.
“Nothing has changed. If we inject

without BST would do. The cow
regulates her metabolism just like
she has always done.
“You hear that you get 20 to 40
percent more milk,” Patton said.
“That’s true depending on the level
of production. You get 10 to 12
pounds of increase regardless of
what the cow is producing. So, if
like the Russians, your cows only
give 20 pounds of milk, you are
happy to get a 50 percent increase.
But a 100 pound cow will get a 10
pound increase too. It’s not a per
cent increase but a pound
increase.”
Patton said that you get a larger
response in mid-lactation and first
calf heifers do not respond as well

humans. If you accidentally inject
yourself with it, nothing will hap
pen to you.
“We need to explain to consum

it. In England where the BST con
troversy received big play, even in
the soap operas, milk consumption
increased, Patton said. “We must
tell people that they enjoy the
cheapest source of food in the
world, and we are not out to poi
